1918 - Bluesman Elmore James, “The King of the Slide Guitar”, is born in Holmes County, Mississippi
1930 - “The Lord of the Blues” Bobby “Blue” Bland, who pioneered the sound that was a mixture of gospel with blues and R&B, is born Robert Calvin Bland in Rosemark, Tennessee
1955 - Robert McFerrin, Sr., father of singer Bobby McFerrin, makes his debut as Amonasro, the Ethiopian king, in Aida, becoming the first African-American man to sing at the Metropolitan Opera
1972 - Mahalia Jackson, known as the Queen of Gospel Music, dies from complications of Heart Failure and diabetes at the age of 60
1973 - Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” climbs to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 and stays for one week
1984 - Michael Jackson would suffer second and third degree burns on his scalp during the filming of a Pepsi commercial with his brothers in the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.
1985 - Stevie Wonder wins the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for “I Just Called to Say I Love You” from “The Woman in Red”
1991 - Whitney Houston would deliver arguably the most memorable performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” ever, during Super Bowl XXV at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida, which occurred during the heart of the Gulf War
1991 - Dr. Dre assaults Dee Barnes, host of the hip hop show “Pump It Up”, after its coverage of the N.W.A/Ice Cube beef as Dre’s bodyguards hold off the crowd. Dre was fined $2500, placed on two years’ probation, and ordered to perform 240 hours of community service and produce an anti-violence public service announcement
1998 - Arista Records releases “Too Close”, a future number one single from the R&B group Next.
