To live a meaningful life, we need to understand and accept that life is both light and dark, simultaneously beautiful and violent. Ignoring the dark side won’t make it go away. An artist is a product of their time and environment––absorbing and internalising what’s around them, then expressing it. I am deeply affected by humanity’s darker side, so I am interested in its effect on my psyche and the images from my subconscious. To ensure the resulting image is as close to my subconscious as possible, I use Automatism in my process. I work intuitively without any preconceived idea, layer by layer, letting each action inform the next, following my feeling. Today, we are more preoccupied with social media, advertisers and media selling us dreams and the various instant gratifications instead of seeking personal growth. Reality is often behind layers of beautiful illusions, carefully catered to get the most likes and followers. I am not above this, for I am human.
