Evelynn and Sydney's trip to Canada was probably the only time she'd actually enjoyed being back in her home country. It wasn't that she hated Canada, she'd just never found it that interesting, as many people did where they'd grown up. But going there with her best friend, and visiting her home and family had really changed the way Sydney thought about Canada. It was as if she was visiting it with a new pair of eyes, as Evelynn took her places in Toronto she'd never even heard of, let alone been to. Sydney was taking to back street café's and parks hidden behind rows of houses. Eve showed Sydney what the real capital of her home country was like, rather than the guidebook version. Taking Eve to her hometown of Greenwood was one of Sydney's favorite parts of the trip. Very few people, besides those who lived their and their relatives and friends, knew of Greenwood. It was a tiny village in Canada, with a population of a little over 600. Some may argue that growing up around such few people isn't good for children, but Sydney loved it. Everyone there knew everyone, which was probably one of the reasons why her Aunt's house was always so full. Besides having three children and Sydney, there was always extra heads around the house. Everyone just came and went as they pleased, and it was one of the reasons Sydney had learnt to fend for herself. There wasn't much to do in Greenwood, except introduce Eve to all the people that resided there, and take her to the lake in the woods which surrounded their house. As her house was always so chaotic, the lake was Sydney's calm little place she had found years ago, and often escaped their when things got too much.
Sydney was a bearer of bad luck though, and some of that had seemed to rub off on their trip home. The two girls barely made their flight, slipping in by just minutes, but once they had boarded the plane, everything seemed to run smoother. Sydney loved plane rides; she found being so high up in the air exhilarating, and so she say happily looking out of the plane window for the whole journey home, whilst chatting away to Evelynn. Once they disembarked the plane, they collected their luggage from baggage reclaim first, seeing as theirs was the last to be loaded onto the plane, due to them being so late. After they exited the airport, they loaded their luggage into Eve's car, as she began the drive back to Northwood. Everything took a turn for the worse after that though. The pulled in by a near by store, as a quick stop by before returning to Northwood. That was when they felt the tremors beneath them. The ground began to shake and various items of food, drink, cigarettes, magazines, you name it, fell off the shelved, landing on the floor next to their feet. Grabbing on to the nearest available surface, the cashier desk, Sydney had pulled Evelynn closer to her, as they hung on to the counter, waiting for the tremors to stop. Sydney had never experienced an earthquake before, but she knew they would be better off outside, where they didn't have the risk of the building collapsing on top of them. Grabbing Evelynn's arm, she ran though the store, pushing through the double doors as they made their way outside. The tremors stopped shortly after, and Eve and Sydney began to make their way over to the local Community Centre a few blocks away, abandoning her car and hoping it would be undamaged when they returned to collect it later on.
Once they were safely inside the Community Centre, the first thing Sydney did was reach for her phone, and to no surprise found out she had no signal; the telephone wires must have been damaged in the quake. Sitting down on one of the chairs next to Evelynn, Sydney pulled her in for a hug as the enormity of what had just happened hit her. Just mere hours ago, the two were sat on a plane, laughing away and chatting about their trip to Canada which they had just concluded. And here they were, roughly three hours later, having survived an earthquake when most of the surrounding buildings hadn't. An earthquake which had reached 8.5 on the richter scale. She was sure her family must have seen the news by now, but she had no way of contacting them to tell them she was ok. Steven. She suddenly shot up, realizing he was still in the Bahamas, and like her family, had no way of knowing she was ok. Her mind began racing, her thoughts buzzing around in her head, but there was only one she could properly grasp onto. What happens now? ..Fuck.
