My take on the whole VMA situation
I felt as though i needed to make a post about this situation because its been two days already and its gone on long enough. I’ve read loads of articles on it already and many seem to misunderstand what Taylor was trying to say and are throwing all kinds of insults and hate towards her, which there is no need for.
First off;
Taylor’s tweet was in a response to this;
Nicki’s tweet was no doubt directed at Taylor and the Bad Blood music video, as the only video nominated for VOTY that fits the category of ‘women with very slim bodies’ is Bad Blood (models, Karlie, Cara, Gigi etc.)
Beyoncé has a very much similar body figure to Nicki, so the tweet wouldn’t have been directed at her.
Furthermore; the only female nominees for VOTY is Taylor and Beyoncé
Not saying that this is what Nicki meant by ‘”other” girls’ , but my interpretation of this is that Nicki was referring to skin colour.
Anyway, back to Taylor’s first tweet.
Taylor was obviously offended by the fact that Nicki had criticised her video and was saying that her video only got nominated because she had slim women in the video, which is clearly not true. It is clear that Taylor put a lot of hard work into the video as seen in her behind the scenes clips.
Taylor then proceeded to say that it was unlike of Nicki to ‘pit women against each other’. By this, the way i see it is that Taylor felt that Nicki was attacking her for no apparent reason, and that Nicki was trying to pick a fight.
Nicki then replied with;
It was clear her tweet was directed at Taylor and yet she still denied it.
Despite Nicki saying she loved Taylor, Nicki then went to favourite some fans tweets, some of which were not very nice about Taylor. So much for loving her?
Taylor did not only reply politely to Nicki, but even asked her to join her on stage.
When we all thought this was the end, Nicki continued to RT and favourite tweets that were rude to Taylor and then decided that that was not enough and posted this;
First of all, Taylor was NOT applauded for taking her whole catalogue off Spotify by everyone, she was dragged too, even by some of her fans.
Second, Taylor supports Tidal as her music is available on the streaming service.
Lastly, this was irrelevant to what Nicki was trying to stand up for.
Moving on…
So Katy Perry decides she wants a part of all this.
Admittedly, i was confused as to what Katy was trying to say. It just seems as though she wanted some attention. I am still questioning whether i actually fully understand what she means.
I think what Katy was trying to say is that Taylor is a hypocrite and with Bad Blood, Taylor is trying to take down Katy, yet Taylor is responding to Nicki and saying why is she pitting women against each other, when she is doing it herself, if that makes any sense at all.
Okay, lets clear some things up. Taylor has already said that Bad Blood is not about taking the other person down. Bad Blood is about betrayal, and that the song is for other people in similar situations to apply to their real lives. The video is somehow motivational in the sense that even if you have been betrayed, you can get back up.
What Nicki had to say had a point at the beginning, she was saying that because she is a woman of colour, her video did not get nominated for VOTY. However, this would have been a valid point if 3.5/5 of the nominees were not people of colour.
Her first tweets were directed at MTV, and rightly so since it is the MTV VMAS, they picked the nominees. But then she went off topic and started indirectly calling out the other nominees.
Taylor did nothing wrong, she did not ask to get nominated. MTV obviously believed that Bad Blood was a worthy contender of VOTY. Taylor stood up for herself, and there was nothing wrong with that. Nicki was criticising Taylor’s video. Taylor did not deny or try to challenge Nicki’s argument over being snubbed of a nomination because of her skin colour.
And as for Nicki, her argument may have been valid if she didn’t get nominated for any awards at all, but she did. And so did many other people of colour. Many worthy people do not get nominated as you can’t nominate EVERYONE, so Nicki’s video may have been worthy, but not as much as the nominees.
Nicki should NOT have body shamed at all, and i feel as though this should be pointed out but referring to people as white and calling them out over that is also racist.
This was such a long rant and I’m sorry, but i felt as though it needed to be said. I think i missed a load of stuff out but oh well. Also, this is entirely my interpretation and my opinion on it, so yeah, i don’t expect everyone to agree with it.
