It's non other than the Fool!!

p. 544. ‘Ah, not all are as immune to my wiles as you are, Fitz.’ and ‘- Who, oh light of my life,-.’ Two examples on the same page and also calling Fitz handsome when he was recovering. And these are only three examples. The Fool has been flirting with Fitz for YEARS. If I remember correctly, he also kisses Fitz in this book. And then Fitz has the nerve to act surprised that the Fool is in love with him.

We have seen them go through absolutely horrible situations and get out of them together. Literally out of death! They have disagreed and argued, but have always managed to come back together. They have been open about missing each other and seeking that connection. They know each other so well that they have been able to give one of a kind type of gifts to the other. Despite both of them having their own secrets, they have been really open and vulnerable. They can always talk to each other. The trust is mutual, they don't have to play games to test that.

After we have seen all that, it requires A LOT to be able to believe that Fitz feels that way about anyone else (Nighteyes is a special one of course). It's not enough for the reader for Fitz to just say "I trust and like this person a lot" without having anything real to show for it. It's not even that I need Fitz and the Fool to be in a relationship. Like I said, Fitz can and should have others too. It's just that as a reader, I have a hard time seeing the real depth of some of those other relationships after seeing what those two share. Molly for example. I think Fitz has put way more work, effort and care in to his relationship with the Fool than with Molly. I like both of those characters but I don't feel much of that connection or intimacy between them. Or at least it doesn't feel deep at all. There's so much more I could say about this but I just needed to post about this to the void.

I think Fool's Fate now takes the crown of the book that has made me cry the most.

I will need to sit with this one for a while. Like that was A LOT. I can not just move on from a series this good. I will need a bit more than a minute to process everything. I will definitely be drawing lots.
