In the course of their conversation the topic of Sansa's future came up and the truth of everything came to light. What looked to the world as an incredibly advantageous marriage for the Stark family was, in fact, an arrangement of convenience that was organized by Tywin himself, kept secret by husband and wife these five —near six years. 

From Tywin’s lips came the confession that Sansa was his truest friend and companion, his anchor and source of strength, even before his age betrayed him and his health began to fail. Now she was a caring hand and peaceful voice. To Tywin she had never been a wife in truth, nor would she be. She was a woman that he would have gladly called ‘good daughter’ had Jaime’s wild ways and marriage-avoidance not kept him away from the peerage for so long. Of all of their words, this was the revelation that had shocked Jaime to his core. Sansa could have been his, she could have been his bride and his beloved…his alone.
