Wartime #propagandaposters form a strong section of our #VintagePosters sale which includes images from #WWI, #WWII, #TheGreatDepression and the #GermanPeaceCouncil. Featured here is a circa 1917 poster calling for US soldiers to rush to #Berlin. What at first glance appears to be a single soldier scrambling, is in fact two soldiers, one white and the other black, hurrying together. The #UnitedStatesArmy remained segregated during the #FirstWorldWar, but African Americans served in their own units in the #AmericanExpeditionaryForce, and in some cases fought side by side with French units. Today marks the 50th anniversary of #Apollo11's moon landing on July 20, 1969. 🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓🌔 Since the first lunar landing 50 years ago, we have mapped the surfaces of the Moon, #Mars and #Venus with greater detail and ease than most of the places on the floor of Earth’s oceans. We have entered an era that endeavors to turn the cosmos into a commodity with space tourism startups. Human colonization of space no longer seems like an unworkable Sci-Fi theory but actually an active area of research and complicated possibility. We have witnessed the first image of a supermassive #blackhole, assembled by cooperating telescopes stationed around the world. There is a growing layer of space trash orbiting around Earth, and the first protest in space was mounted in 2017 by the #AutonomousSpaceAgencyNetwork. We offer no conclusions to this chaos. SPRING HIGHLIGHTS: In 1958 #DorotheaLange and her husband, #PaulSchusterTaylor, traveled extensively for eight months, visiting twelve countries. Despite the poverty and trauma Lange saw throughout the 1930s, she was unprepared for the utter misery of Korea. After the invasion of South Korea, the ensuing Civil War from 1950 to 1953, and a president installed by the US, the country was ravaged by ethnic cleansing. Children were abandoned and racism was rampant. Lange, distressed by the dire situation she saw everywhere, was aggravated that she, an American tourist, had special privileges. Her photograph of a young Korean child in a torn and soiled t-shirt fastened with a safety pin, his eyes closed, was cropped from a larger picture of a classroom setting. SPRING HIGHLIGHTS: Among the rarities offered in our February sale of #VintagePosters was a 1927 poster for the #Stockholm premiere of #JosephineBaker's silent film "La Sirène des Tropiques." The image was rendered after a photograph of Baker taken by #LucienWalery which had appeared in a program for the #FoliesBergère and depicts the star in her iconic "pearl and feather" costume with a few changes added for modesty.
