OUTCAST EP1: JOAN SUMMERS

…inevitably, there is going to be a girl who watches this film. And this girl might have a camera. And she might see herself in Rashida, or Lotus, or yourself. What are some things you would want this girl to know? What is some advice you would transfer to her? 

Joan: I would tell her that there are going to be a lot of people in her life who try to make her art their art, and who are going to try to tell her how to live and how to express herself and what is the proper way to not only be a girl and be a woman, but to be an artist and a filmmaker maker– and she is the only one who really knows who she is and what she wants to say…

…women are the only filmmakers I know still making movies that challenge status quos and are completely setting new, never-seen-before, box office records, smashing records, setting new standards et cetera. And so there is a magic in that. There’s something to be said for that. We have a point of view that no one else has yet. And so stick to your point of view. Don’t try to rehash old stories. Don’t try to do something that someone else has done before. Men have been telling stories for a thousand year, you know? women finally have the opportunity to tell our own stories and so stick to that. There’s pride in that.
