Tap, tap.
i find it so off-putting when adults demand a child-free public. being disappointed that there are too many kids at an all-ages event, demanding adult-only events in otherwise public spaces. like you want to go to some arts & crafts thing but you're going to be weird about it if there's a 7-year-old at the table with you? or act like sharing the same public space and being slightly inconvenienced by noise is the same thing as being forced to do childcare?
like. we are in a political moment where minors are pushed out of SO many physical and digital spaces. and instead of recognizing that as a crisis - a public health emergency, even - so many adults are just willing to go along with that if it suits their sensibilities.
especially having visited so many other countries where children are more accommodated in public, or at least just accepted as a part of public life... the extent of age-segregated infrastructure in the US is just so fucking weird to me and it makes life SO much harder. for kids and for caregivers. and it's kind of a self-feeding cycle - once it's normal to have kid-free museums and malls and event centers, etc etc, adults who are not active caregivers hardly ever check in to make sure there are enough accessible services for kids. they kind of just assume that there are (or don't care one way or another), and they keep demanding more and more age segregation.
and it's a kind of grief i have to carry around all the time, knowing how much better it could be if people gave a singular shit about kids. like i said i've experienced so many other societies where it's Not Like This and adults still somehow manage to survive. but adults here in the US don't care, they don't see these preferences as discriminatory against an oppressed class, and i'm the one who comes off looking crazy when i bring it up.

oh my god? the x files-fandom was the fandom that invented the word ‘shipping’? JESUS CHRIST I LOVE Y’ALL
Yes, back in the early days, there were two camps of fans: “Relationshippers” (people all about the MSR) and the “NoRomos” (people all about the platonic partnership.) Relationshippers was eventually shortened to “shippers.”
The X-Files popularity just happened to parallel the birth of the internet. Philes took it by storm with the creation of fan forums, chat groups, and hundreds of websites devoted to the show, characters, and the actors. :)
The X-Files fandom also coined the term UST (Unresolved Sexual Tension) as a fanfic descriptor. :D Fandom history is pretty neat.
Sweet baby Jesus, I actually remember this and feel really old now.
Every time I get wind of youngsters trying to push older fans out of fan spaces, I need to trot this out because there are a number of terms still in use in fandom today that were first coined on the X-Files relationshipper mailing list that I created and ran for years (this was WAAAAAYYY before social media; we posted our fic to Usenet, y’all.) That list has its own Fanlore entry.
So, for anyone who still things fandom is no place for older people: junior, we invented the fan spaces you want to exclude us from.

I don't wanna stay inside all week :( But the weather is weathering.
In other news I GOT SOME OF MY ENERGY BACK FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MONTHS. Hell yeah.
Having been raised Catholic, I'm honestly confused on how a lot of Catholic conservatives believe that a woman's only purpose is to get married and have children. Like my brother in Christ single life is literally a recognized vocation in your own religion.
"Only the sex/romance repulsed people get representation"
"Only the sex/romance favorable people get representation"
Guys... none of us are getting representation. It's not "everyone supports until..." It's that most people aren't supporting at all, so people are taking blatant aphobia as a blatant attack against their values.
Other aroaces are not trying to "steal" your representation. Aphobes are trying to make it not exist in the first place and using our identities as excuses.
I don’t even mean this in a rude way but how can you wonder why you don’t have friends if you think things like texting someone “hi” or double texting or not replying within a certain amount of hours is not normal like im sorry but why does talking to you involve learning an ancient code and seeing visions of the future in the rain
wore my thigh high boots on a walk today and we had to take a path through some long grass and while everyone else was rolling their pants into their socks and putting on jackets to protect themselves from ticks i was standing there smug as hell in my thigh high leather boots.

I honestly just don't have much tolerance for dark, dystopian SciFi anymore, even though there are plenty of great stories that fall under that. I LIVE in a dystopian nightmare world. I don't wanna see that in my media anymore. It's why I love Project Hail Mary, it's why I loved Doctor Who when I used to watch it, it's why I love old Star Trek. I just don't have it in me to consume dark and depressing stuff anymore.
SPEAKING OF WHICH
If you also are feeling this, I recommend Quantum Leap. I mean it's an older show so there's... ✨ some problems✨ (I apologize for Al, please ignore him) but. Overall feel good show.

Growing up undiagnosed neurodivergent and with learning disabilities for me was like...
There's this invisible wall that you keep running up against, and everyone keeps telling you that the wall isn't real, and you just want to feel special. Or they tell you that everyone has The Wall and they just go over it so you just need to try harder. So you try as hard as you can and you push yourself and you still can't get over the wall, so you have to find ways to go around the wall. And sometimes you can go around the wall, but there are some situations where you just can't. But everyone's still telling you that the wall isn't real, even when the wall stops you from doing certain things. And so you hate yourself because even if the wall is real, which is apparent debatable, it's the same wall everyone else has, and THEY get over it, so you should be able to as well. And you hate yourself for being, like, a weak-willed person, who COULD do better but for some reason you just can't get over this invisible wall and it's YOUR fault, you don't know how but it must be because everyone says it is.
Getting diagnosed as an adult is like, great, now the wall is visible, but I've spent decades hating myself and now I have to somehow unlearn those thought patterns. Also a lot of people are still going to pretend like the wall isn't there. And those who do actually acknowledge the wall will say "Don't limit yourself, you can do anything if you just believe!" Even though you've spent decades believing that the wall wasn't there or wasn't that tall and no matter what you believed the wall was still there and it still stopped you from doing certain things whether you believed in it or not.
