Astarion always smiles at Tav. He says such nice things every time he drinks from her. He calls her darling. That has to mean something, right? No one has ever called her darling before.
ā
A naive Tav gets cruelly rejected by Astarion at the tiefling party, which leaves her heartbroken. Soon, he realizes his mistake ā but it might just be too late to fix it.
A snippet to whet your appetite:
Breakfast is the worst.
Tav knew it would be the worst, but she can't just hide in her tent either. They'll know something's wrong. They'llĀ talk.
So there she sits, wedged between Wyll and Gale, trying her damnedest to keep what little she has eaten on the inside. Her head throbs in time with her pulse, as though her heart has squeezed its way up into her neck and is pounding on the door to her brain. Her hands are shaking so badly she can barely hold onto her plate of scrambled eggs. Her skin is coated in a sheen of cold sweat. She has never felt so sick in her life.
Then there'sĀ him. Astarion stands a few paces from the campfire, leaning back against a tree. One leg loosely crossed over the other, eyes on the dagger he's idly been sharpening all morning, perfectly disinterested in the chatter. He didn't so much as glance up when Tav tottered over to join the others.
She's there, too. Lae'zel. Cold, aloof, reeking of disdain. Thankfully, she sits as far from him as she does from Tav. Gods, had they spent the morning cuddling and smooching insteadā¦
But no, the morning has been been quiet and uneventful. Mercifully so.
"Soooooā¦" Across the fire from her, Karlach elbows the githyanki with a shit-eating grin on her face. "You and Fangs, huh?"

Having some thoughts about Astarion and polyamory/ethical non-monogamy this evening. Thought I'd write them down to clarify them for myself and figure out why the whole Halsin Situation doesn't sit right with me.
This is not intended to be one of those one-sided pro/anti type posts that I see so often around here. Iām not trying to change opinions, I'm just figuring out my own. My approach is to slowly rotate these ideas in my head, maybe with a drink in hand, try to look at them from different angles and perspectives. Maybe, hopefully, to reach some conclusions at the end of it.
This is loooong, so I'll put the rest below the cut. If you're sick of this topic, please ignore and keep on scrolling. X)
Note that I'm defining polyamory and ENM as two different things here. These aren't necessarily 100% correct dictionary definitions, but I'm hoping they'll help distinguish between two related but different concepts as I ramble on:
Polyamory: Multiple committed romantic and/or sexual relationships. One possible form of ENM.
Ethical non-monogamy (ENM): More of an umbrella term that includes any kind of consensual, informed situation that isn't strictly monogamous (open relationships, swinging, threesomes etc).
Halsin's proposition
In Act 3, Halsin can proposition Tav. He seems to be suggesting some kind of polyamory arrangement, where all three parties are active presences in each other's lives. Astarion, on the other hand, instantly dismisses it as just a way of letting off some steam.
Astarion's assumptions make sense in the context of his history. For one, in his past experience any expression of interest equaled sex. As such, sex has been meaningless to him for a long, long time. I suspect it still is, in the sense that to him the act itself is entirely divorced from romance and relationships. It can be a part of them, sure, but sex in itself isn't an indicator of commitment and deeper feelings.
But that's not what Halsin says. He speaks of hearts stirring, not loins. His language suggests a romantic relationship as well as a physical one. He even brings up Astarion's participation, while Astarion himself seems to have zero interest in it. (Tav can "have as much Halsin as you wish", not him too or them together.) This means at least two people of this triad are going into it with wildly different assumptions and expectations, and that's a recipe for disaster. (Ask me how I know, lol.)
Astarion and consent
Then there's the question of Astarion's ability to consent. This is quite a divisive question ā understandably so. Can we trust Astarion to be truthful about this, or are we infantilizing him by refusing to take his word for it?
In terms of autonomy, we have to respect his "yes" (and "no"). You can't have this kind of relationship (or any, really) if you don't trust what the other person is saying. But there is a difference between giving consent freely vs. giving it under duress, e.g. to avoid losing the existing relationship. That's where things turn a bit iffy for me.
Duress doesn't always look like smacking someone with an ultimatum. It can be subtle, something that creeps in without any of the parties involved being aware of it, fueled by issues with the existing relationship or with the person who ends up under duress. It could be some kind of power imbalance, or past trauma affecting present judgement. It could be (unacknowledged) fear, insecurity, trampled self esteem. Some of those issues are very much present in Astarion & Tav's relationship.
Take the latter two, for example. Throughout the game, we get glimpses of Astarion's insecurity and self esteem issues. If Tav breaks up with him before his questline ends, his reaction makes it clear that he had been expecting it. At this point in the game, he doesn't see himself as worthy relationship material. Whether Tav intends it or not (or Astarion himself, for that matter), this insecurity gives rise to a power differential in the relationship.
There's also the matter of stakes (hah). After his confession in Act 2, Astarion turns down any poly offers Tav might bring. It doesn't necessarily reflect his opinions on ENM; it's just that being in a single relationship is new and confusing enough to him as is. He doesn't even know what Tav actually means to him yet ā and because of all this, the stakes are lower. He has less to lose, because he hasn't figured out what he actually has yet.
By Act 3, that has changed. His feelings for Tav have become more clear. In Baldur's Gate pre-Cazador quest, the threat of his sire looms closer, giving Astarion a hell of a lot more to lose if he angers or upsets Tav. Like it or not, as the leader of the tadfools, Tav has more power than him. Adding it all up, it means that when Tav comes to him with a proposition from Halsin, it is a fundamentally different situation than the Act 2 refusals. The stakes are much higher.
There's also the way this whole matter is raised. Tav shows up to ask about opening up with a lover already lined up. This is a hugely different situation from talking about opening up theoretically. Not one, but two people are waiting for an answer within a short deadline. There's so much more pressure.
Now, to a non-monogamous person, this pressure might not exist at all. It would likely not even register as a potentially coercive situation. And Astarion could very well be non-monogamous! His enthusiasm in the brothel scene post-Cazador certainly shows that he's interested in exploring such things.
However, there is the fact that Astarion and Tav have been in a monogamous relationship until this point. Explicitly so at his request, if Tav asked about dating two people at once back in Act 2. Astarion could be polyamorous, yes ā but he could also be some other flavor of ENM, or he could still be unsure what he is at this point, or he might even be leaning toward monogamy. All of those readings are supported by canon material in game, depending on conversation paths and what you choose to prioritize. If he is one of the latter two, the pressure would absolutely be on. And if Astarion already turned down Tav's suggestion to open up in Act 2, or refused to sleep with the drow twins at the brothel, then with each "no" the pressure to say "yes" next time only grows and grows...
One could even make the case that Astarion isn't interested in polyamory (hence shooting down Tav's suggestion of dating someone else in Act 2), but is fine with no-strings flings and categorizes Halsin as the latter. This isn't going to end well since it doesn't quite match what Halsin is actually proposing, but it could be a valid interpretation given what we see in the game. (And a pretty interesting one, honestly... Anyone looking for angsty fic material? X)
To be clear, I don't think Astarion would agree to something he consciously knows he isn't comfortable with at this stage. However, these things have a way of affecting behaviors subconsciously nonetheless, especially if he's still uncertain or overwhelmed by other matters (Cazador).
Spawn vs. Radiant vs. Ascendant
...Which brings me to the post-Cazador versions of this conversation. So far I've been talking about spawn Astarion, but what about radiant or ascended Astarion? Does that change the situation?
It does, in my opinion. Removing Cazador from the situation removes an enormous amount of fear that can and does affect Astarion's decisions and behavior. Comparing spawn Astarion with radiant and ascended Astarion's reactions also offers better insight into his thinking.
I haven't experienced these post-Cazador paths myself (Halsin usually wants to jump my Tavs' bones by Rivington X), but I've checked out videos of them. In both cases Astarion seems more calm and confident once the spectre of Cazador is no longer hanging over his head, although for different reasons. The Ascendant sees sex and even love as tools, not something that can threaten the bond between sire and spawn, so a fling with Halsin doesn't matter. Radiant Astarion has a better idea of what matters to him, along with a deeper trust in Tav and an acceptance of what he can and can't control. If I ever play a Tav who is propositioned by Halsin after the end of Astarion's questline, I don't think the doubts I've voiced here would matter so much.
But if Astarion is genuinely cool with it post-Cazador, doesn't that mean that he's cool with it pre-Cazador?
It's possible, sure ā but if he was still uncertain about his needs and desires at that point, or if his insecurities ended up swaying him to make a call without fully thinking it through, the issue of duress still stands.
In conclusion...
Can we definitively say that (spawn) Astarion is consenting under duress in the Halsin situation? No, of course not. Not without actually seeing into his head and reading his thoughts.
Can we definitively say that (spawn) Astarion is consenting without duress? Also no, and that is at the heart of why the situation doesn't feel right to me. There's too much room for doubt.
Now to be clear, this isn't necessarily a problem with the game. Different choices and multiple interpretations is what gives an RPG room to breathe. My feelings as a player aren't necessarily the same as those of the Tavs I'm playing, which turns these moments of ambiguity into interesting opportunities for characterization.
But if we were to try and remove those iffy feelings, I don't think it would require much. It could be done with just a couple of extra conversations and lines in the game: maybe talking about non-monogamy with Astarion before Halsin propositions the player; an option to clarify the expectations around opening up while asking for Astarion's blessing; having a check-in after to make sure Astarion (and Tav!) is still fine with it the morning after the hookup. To me, that would have made a world of difference.
The good news is that in fic and headcanon land, you can do all that! There's absolutely room for it in the gaps between canon scenes. And while there isn't enough in the game to convince me that Astarion is polyamorous, specifically, I do think he's interested in exploring various flavors of non-monogamy as he figures himself out. It's just that pre-Cazador, when Astarion is still so unsure and worried about so much, isn't the best time to do that.
Played a little more BG3 and was thinking, my favorite thing about Astarionās personality is that heās so chatty and almost flighty. The man is garrulous, he loves a good palaver and is always talking with his hands. Heās not still, always in motion. I bet he fidgets and would benefit from a good worry stone.
And I think about how his master probably punished him for that, tore him down for being āannoyingā or āirritatingā. It makes me sad, but I also like the idea of him becoming comfortable with himself and embracing that heās allowed to take up space and exist as himself.
Unrelated note hereās an adorable baby killdeer:
Yes! Given how eager he is to share his opinions with strangers, I canāt help but think that itās a trait Cazador just never could condition out of him (much to Cazadorās chagrin).
And it must be so satisfying for Astarion to finally be able to speak and express himself freely, among people who listen.
Friendly reminder to Galemancers that Gale's ambition is not something new.
In fact, I'd say Ambition is his "bread and bloody butter" (to quote God!Gale addressing Raphael)
(also, Mystra can bitch and moan all she wants, she inspires Ambition in her followers, this isn't unique to Gale but it certainly is one of his most dangerous traits. After all, when a mortal becomes a god, your godhood embodies what you are at your most base form. Gale becoming potentially God of Ambition is no fluke. It is Gale at his most base form)
Here's something we often forget when we write about Gale: the Gale we meet is heavily nerfed (twice, once by Orb, second by tadpole) and he's been humbled by his folly. Ambition is the last thing on is mind at the start of the game.
By the point you meet him, he was probably on his way north to find a secluded place to detonate the orb (Waterdeep is not one of the cities the Nautiloid passed, but Yartar is and that's to the north, hence the theory he was caught there on this way north) and he only starts to actively care about his survival when you pull him out of the waypoint sigil (he obviously doesn't want to die (his line from failing to help him out: "No! I'm slipping. I'll perish in here. I'll perish...")), he's more concerned for what the detonation of the orb will do than preserving his life since now he's not alone anymore.
Cue the orb reveal and him offering to leave. Again, he's more concerned about what the orb will do to others than him surviving. In his mind, he deserves this.
Cue meeting Elminster and Gale receiving his divine mandate: use the orb to destroy the heart of the Absolute and redeem himself in death.
Here's usually where many people fail to understand Gale's motives.
He resigns himself to use the orb because Mystra (his goddess, scrap the lover part, that's not even important here, his literally goddess whom he worships (and he does, there's literal lines in the game (by Wyll and Gale himself) confirming that Gale is a very religious man, his romance with Mystra was more than love, it was religious) has ordered him to do it. it has nothing to do with his residual feelings for her (but it does hurt him that she would not even tell him this order directly, that he means so little to her that she'd send his friend instead) and everything to do with religion (hence why it's so hard to convince him otherwise, he risks becoming Faithless... doubly so because he is one of her Chosen, even if formerly) and also Gale's intellect fucking him over here (he is a man of thought and reason, he's doing mental gymnastics to try and figure out a way that allows him to survive but unfortunately, he's at his lowest point here and he doesn't fight Mystra's demand, he caves to reason, that this is the best, quickest way to end the Absolute (it is but, I'd argue that Mystra's latest incarnation is the dumbest god in all of DnD because she failed to account for the countless souls that would be lost in the wake of the Absolute's death... soul death is no joke in the lore, Ao would probably deal with her harshly in the wake of Gale using the orb simply because of how badly she'd fuck up the material plane's supply of souls)
And then when you finally do convince him to not use the orb and Gale sees the Crown of Karsus, many assume he's becoming power hungry because he's learning to be selfish for once, or that this is just a wizard quirk, of wanting to understand dangerous artifacts, attain godhood etc. No, actually this is perfectly in character for Gale specifically.
See, Gale's goals shift according to how much information he has.
When the journey starts, it's merely survival, but as it progresses, he reasons that using the orb is the best path forward. if you romance him or befriend him, you can convince him not to use the orb and then his priorities shift again in the wake of Act 3's beginning. Fresh from surviving the Orb and Myrkul, he has a new lease on life. He's potentially in a romance and he's got his eyes set on the Crown. The Archmage is finally making his reappearance and it's up to the player to determine where Gale applies his ambition. And sometimes even with the player's input he can choose poorly (ala Sneaky God!Gale, which to me is actually the most narratively interesting ending because this is basically Gale deciding to become a god on his own and can have any number of valid headcanons to justify it)
Gale in Act 3 is the closest we get to seeing the Gale of Waterdeep from before the events of BG3 and him getting the Orb.
One does not become an Archmage by twiddling one's thumbs, you become an Archmage by being ruthless in your ambitions, by being the most intelligent person in the room at all times, by striving constantly for the next discovery, the next adventure etc... it isn't something you stumble into, you have to work very, very hard for it, relentlessly even.
Gale was already ambitious before the events of BG3, the orb and his romance with Mystra are testimony to that, so it stands to reason that ambition is a major part of him.
Even in his Professor!Gale ending, his ambition has shifted again, this time being either for his family (Morena and Tara) or his lover and his family. In the God!Gale ending, his ambition has reached its zenith and transcended (he's literally Ambition now) and he's sharing his Ambition with his petitioners.
Long story short, Gale's Ambition didn't just come out of nowhere, him becoming a god or professor or adventurer etc is not out of character (this is one of the reasons i love him so much, there's no bad ending for him besides using the Orb (and dying during apotheosis, but really that's more of a skill issue on Gale than anything since you'd think he'd do his research lol even without player input), he's always been ambitious.
The Gale we meet has been humbled and nerfed twice but the Archmage is still in there. He only starts to properly rear his head once he sees the Crown and survives Act 2...
