The surgical team
WHERE ARE MY I’s &O’s?!?!?!?!?!
Cat Scan.
For a bit of caturday humor. Who said science can’t be fun?
Medical Instruments by d o l f i on Flickr.
So you are studying the tools of the trade then right?
Kind of. The technician tasks are many but all meet the sole purpose of avoid the surgeon look away from what he’s doing. Making the task of the surgeon as comfortable and faster as possible.
In every surgery should be two technicians performing two different tasks:
The sterile technician is who manipulates all sterile material. He must accommodate the instrumental table ensuring that nothing is missing at the beginning of surgery and, more importantly, at the end. He must be aware of the development of surgery and anticipate the material used. The circulating technician is responsible for manipulating lights, operating table, etc. and bring what is needed from outside the operating room. All tasks that the sterile staff cannot perform.
A good technician should not only know the instrumental but also know the surgical technique exactly. Maybe not going to operate, but must anticipate what it will need in the next step of the surgery.
Think that the patient cannot wait for the technician to put linen thread, this should be done before the surgeon requires.
Hey so I have to Write an essay on being a surgeon and need a quote from someone, So I was just wondering what your typical day is like? and also if you do decide to answer I just need to know what company or hospital you work at for my bibliography, thank you so much :)
Hello, First I want to clarify that I don’t work, I am a student and I’m not surgery student, I study surgery technician. With respect to hospitals where we practice are the Colegiales and Mitre in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I hope it help you with a day in a hospital practice. Normally I get straight to the locker room. It's a bit like being an actor, you'll take away the common person outfit and you pass to be part of the staff. When people see us wearing ambo think we're doctors. It is rare to see people just trust someone to carry a specific type of clothing.
Once in the surgical floor an instructor indicates that operating room assigned us to work that day. This is similar to work, just that when you work the operating room is assigned by the chief.
Once the surgery was assigned only remains waiting. Personally I like to go to the operating room that I assigned as soon as the cleaning crew leave and make sure do not miss disposable items.
Then comes the patient followed by all the professionals. Installed the patient being in the hands of anesthesiologist, I'll wash and subsequent surgical dressed with sterile clothing. When I have my table ready the patient is already anesthetized and surgeons start demanding my attention.
Luckily, and although as student I make mistakes, never happened to have to endure the punishment of a surgeon. If perhaps some furious look, but never abuse. Overall the atmosphere is relaxed in the operating room, all of that can be relaxed taking someone's life in your hands, but everyone made the effort to be calmer as possible.
In my practice so far I have participated both as circulating handling equipment such as sterile technique among the staff, to attend an anesthesiologist with a patient who went through a bad anesthesia. For every professional I had to attend I learned a lot and I am grateful for their patience.
Only when the patient left the operating room I can go back to take care of my gear, I spend time to make sure everything stayed on conditions and led him to the wash room. Once the work within surgery students we do not have time for much more, perhaps attend a colleague in another operating room.
If I had to give a statement about my practice I would say there are exhausting but very rewarding. Hopefully help you in your work, good luck. Sorry if you got any problems with my translation.
