After 13 years of this, it's still funny to me that detailing a full mental breakdown on tumblr is standard fare, but posting a nice selfie is a fraught decision.
this is the correct way around and every other social media site is wrong
I like the idea in fantasy that humans are better at maintaining things long term because they set up societies or professions to do it whereas dwarves and elves and stuff are like “just get bob to do it he’s got a good few hundred years left” and then bob doesn’t teach anyone else how to do it
Elf: How have you kept this castle maintained for a thousand years if your lives are so short?
Human: We just train new people how to do it?
Elf: *gears visibly turning in their head*
Human: Are you alright?
Elf: I just realized that we didn’t have to let that whole city fall to ruin just because my grandfather died.
Human: What?
Human: Wait that’s why there’s ruins of elven cities even though you live for so long? You just keep not asking people how to do things? How do you learn anything?
Elf: There’s a lot of “you’ve got time to figure it out on your own” attitudes floating around in our society that I’m starting to question somewhat.
Elf: That sword, where did you get it?
Human: My cousin made it.
Elf: Impossible! Those metalworking techniques were lost a hundred years ago!
Human: What do you mean lost? My great-grandmother learned to make these swords from an elven smith, then taught it to her kids.
Elf: That's ridiculous. No elf would give such secrets to a human.
Human: They didn't. Meemaw delivered the metal to the forge, and no one kicked her out when she stayed and watched. She always said they barely acknowledged her even when doing business with her, like she wasn't worth noticing.
Elf: Come to think of it, my great-uncle always was rather single-minded when he started working.
Human: So he wasn't ignoring her, he just forgot she was there?
Elf: Oh, he was definitely ignoring her, too. He was super racist.
the problem with waking up early is you feel absolutely miserable and like you are going to die for the first two hours. and then it’s basically fine. but ohhhhh those first two horrible hours
honestly though: the YA Golden Age teen in me that devoured the Wicked Lovely and Modern tales of Faerie books would LOVE some of that Overwrought Fae Romance that's so hot right now if it were sapphic and well-written
where are the Angsty Morally Gray Shadow Ladies. where's the Dangerous Crow Girl Who Destroys Plastic. describe the clothes lovingly and the romance dramatically. I'm ready. I miss author LiveJournals and I once gave serious thought to what court I'd want to join in the Wicked Lovely books and I have written Jareth/adult!Sarah fanfic and I'm ready
"Caoimhe," Mercy said in a dark undertone, "you must know that the Shadow Court will never countenance our union." In spite of herself, she glanced sidelong at Caoimhe, admiring the way her silvery gown fell from her hips like an expanse of soft moonlight. the bodice involved a complex support network of boning made from the baleen of the [look up how to say whale in Irish even though nobody in this book is actually Irish and there's some random fae mythology from other parts of Europe in here, too] Sidhe, because the author is not fifteen anymore and has become a hobbyist dressmaker in the intervening years.
Caoimhe set her jaw. "But if I do not take a consort, the Autumn Court will fall to ruin. And I would topple empires for my people," she ground out. "Also my name is pronounced KWEEV-ah, for the record. And I really like your forest-green velvet cloak and open redingote of black and silver brocade worn over tight black doeskin leggings."
"thank you," said Mercy. "I got it all from a very interesting courtier couple who work in tandem as the best dressmaker and tailor the Shadow Court has ever seen. they are also lesbians, incidentally."
"the author's going to take a hard left into this story being about them, isn't she?"
"Probably."
"Honestly feeling so called out right now!" the author shouted around a mouthful of popcorn.
Nobody was a vampire because this is a Fae Book.
"Actually," said Mercy, "I'm a baoban sith, which is like a fae vampire."
Mercy needed to shut her lying little bitch mouth right now. Nobody was a vampire. The author was capable of writing fantasy things that don't involve vampires.
Also there was an impractically fancy legendary sword and a prophecy and stuff. See? No vampires.
"I have a castle on a mountain overlooking a cliff, and it has bats."
But like magical bats. With magic. No cold iron.
"I'm basically a vampire."
NOBODY WAS A VAMPIRE.

Frankly, I think companies presenting basic health and consumer safety information as "boring," "uncool," and "not worth your care" should carry a hefty fine based on the revenue that company generates

It occurs to me that the bemused way Americans see something like this is probably the same way Japanese people see Americans who say they love, like, Osaka or wherever.
That pastrami (or maybe corned beef?) does look delicious, though.
She needs to give an opinion on the Wawa vs Quick Check debate if she hasn't already
I'm so sick of every post about education having so many people going "actually school is bad because it forces children to conform to capitalistic standards and (whatever buzzwords that sound leftist and progressive and yet fall in line with the active right wing efforts to push minority students out of education)".
Sorry that you had to drop out of high school. You're like 32 now. You can stop going to every post about education and talking about how evil school is now. I
It's just so crazy to be perpetuating the idea that education is incompatible with disabled children at the same time that republicans are trying to repeal the policies that mandate that schools accommodate and teach disabled children. Like?? Are you stupid???
I think the skeleton key to understanding most tumblr discourse on education is that, when you push past all the buzzwords, they’re not arguing for increased accessibility, but instead buying into plain old reactionary anti-intellectualism. They act like even valuing education is elitist and classist and ableist and every other -ist that you can think of, and it becomes abundantly clear from interacting with these people that they’re compensating for their own lack of curiosity about the world, failures, and unwillingness to learn anything or read a book (which is why they do often claim “no one taught me this in school!” about a basic fact and get offended at people who tell them to use the phone they’re using to look it up). They use disabled students as a shield against their own inadequacy and act like expecting students to do anything they don’t want to do is oppressive because they’re still mad they had to write a book report in middle school instead of sit and watch movies in class with their friends all day, but kids don’t have the knowledge or life experience to know that of course it’s important to learn reading, writing, critical thinking skills, basic math, etc. or else you’re really going to be at a serious disadvantage in life as an adult. But these people are still mad at their teachers, so they say all of this education is frivolous and a waste of time and smhhhh we shouldn’t be teaching students how to do math, that’s icky and difficult and it’s oppressive to challenge students in any way, we should be locking these students out of a college education (which is evil and elitist anyway) by not even trying to make math more accessible to them and instead bring back home economics and teach students of color or disabled students how to clean and cook—because leaving the hard academic subjects for the middle class white kids doesn’t sound Republican at all, right? 🤪

NOT ME YOU SLOP ARTIST
This is a close up? A CLOSE UP YA JERK! A CLOSEUP!
Alright, let’s get this picture started! (The End) NO NOOOOO!
One of the defining moments of animation history.
“Ain’t I a stinker?”
In Babylon 5, didn’t one of the non-humans think Daffy was the god of frustration?
Holy shit, this is nearly 70 years old. This would have been right on the heels of color television being commercially available to the public.
@amayatepes look at this
LMAO
Huh. That’s just a whole ass Daffy Duck cartoon.
Everything about this cartoon is top-notch. The timing, the animation (watch Daffy’s different walks) the art; this is a treasure
Ryland Grace and his popularity as a character feels like such an important step in repairing the cultural tsunami left by the long running trope of every genius character needing to be an insufferable asshole to everyone in a ten mile radios about it.
Conversely, Eva Stratt is doing wonders for repairing and inspiring a appreciation for commanding women with dubious moral convictions who are fully willing to bend laws for the greater good without hesitation.
And together they are doing brilliant things by not kissing or hooking up even once.

Character has a PhD: they’re really smart and knowledgable about their field!
Character has 2 PhDs: either they did a dual degree program and are braggy about it, had a life-changing experience after their first degree and pivoted their whole career, or they find the structure of being a PhD student, despite all its stress, more comfortable and familiar than the stress of finding a Real Job and have a very indulgent advisor.
Character has 3 PhDs: who keeps accepting them to PhD programs. Either this person needs psychological help or their department needs to be investigated for its academic standards. Probably both
Character has 4+ PhDs: if they aren’t an undercover vampire or something then no they don’t lol
Alternatively: this character is some kind of rock star celebrity in their field and has a bunch of honorary degrees from several different institutions, and also this story takes place before most universities adopted a separate postnominal for honorary doctorates specifically to avoid this sort of confusion.
men will literally bend backwards to make you feel stupid rather than admit they might be wrong & then expect you to be nice to them
Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
My first novel after Magic Tree House level books was a 400 page fantasy novel. My mom read my brother and I the first one in the series and wanted to switch to something lighter. I was sorely disappointed until she told me I could read it on my own. I devoured that book and never looked back. I was reading 100 pages an hour within two years.
Awww, did the consequences of your actions come back on you?
