You know, I think one of the most complex ways Greg incidentally wrote Kaldur is when MâGann broke his mind and when she finds him in the ruins, he is faceless and doesnât know who he is anymore.
Now being faceless has many interpretations but one of the ones that really connect to my analysis of faceless Kaldur is that when someone is seen as faceless, it can mean that you never know who they truly are as a person because they refuse to show you.
Again, this is very important for Kaldurâs arc in Season 2 because heâs been lying and pretending to be someone elseâa horrible person at that is so opposite of his true selfâfor the past year, hiding behind facade after facade for the greater good. So him being faceless in that scene represents just how much heâs been hiding away from people and lying so no one can see the truth.
But thereâs another layer as it is Kaldur himself who sees himself a faceless and in his own eyes, doesnât know who he is beyond the masks he wears. He even tells MâGann that he is ruined, what is left for him as he canât even begin to understand who he is as a person.
Like it is obviously talking about him being a spy and all, how he is backstabbing everyone to save them, destroying everything he ever loved so the act can be flawless. This performance has to sell because he canât risk being outed as a actor.
But in the ruins of his mind, we can see for the first time how this is actually affecting him, how all the costumes and performance have left himâŚwithout a face, without a true self, that he doesnât know who is he beyond all of his charades.
And that isnât just a metaphor for how the mission has gone for Kaldur, it just how Kaldur has moved throughout his entire life, how he perceives and who he is as a person. Kaldur is a leader, a solider and faithful to the causeâŚbut who is Kaldurâahm?
Without those titles, who is he? Without these descriptions and honorifics and status, Kaldur is justâŚ.no one.
He is faceless because without his duties and responsibilities, in his mind, he is no one because all of those things are what make him. Kaldurâs achievements and even his shortcomings are who he think he is.
So when stripped of everything, he is bare, open andâŚnothing. He is a nobody and no one remembers the nobodyâs face, now do they?

All that money donated to ao3, even after they've reached their goal. You'd think they'd donate the excess to a charity that needs it?
They are a charity. That's what a non-profit is. They literally legally could not without losing their own charity/non-profit status donate "excess" money to other charities. That money will be put to use to further support and expand the OTW and AO3. They are a non-profit. They are not pocketing the extra money.
I know the protection, perservation, and archival of fanfiction is a strange premise for a non-profit/charity but ao3 and it's parent organization OTW is what it is.

When I said "they" I was talking about the people who continue to donate after Ao3 reaches their goal. Why is that so hard for you to understand? Why is it okay for you to say it but not me?
Thatâs not what you said. You said âthey should donate the excessâ. In a comment only previously naming ao3 as a subject and not any of the donators. Also how would a donator âdonate excessâ that makes no sense. They have no excess they just donated what they could. The only one with excess in the context of this is ao3. Itâs the syntax of how you phrased your comment that is causing the miscommunication.

I never said that nor did I know you were receiving those things. I was explaining how your original post was being read by English language readers. Both native and non native. People who arenât native English speakers would have been taught to look for who the subject was in that sentence. The only subject you made clear being ao3. You were hoping to imply the donators and thatâs a very much native (or near enough) English speaker assumption to make when writing, that people would understand the unsaid part of your sentence.
-raises hand-Â As a native English speaker who studies linguistics and consistently scores quite high on all sorts of things testing my understanding of syntax, etc... There was absolutely nothing in the original post to indicate that âtheyâ might refer to anyone other than Ao3. Also, not everyone on the internet who reads English is a native English-speaker. Not everyone involved in this sort of conversation is a native English-speaker. Posting in a public forum such as the internet means the content can (and likely will) be viewed by people from a variety of backgrounds. Misunderstandings happen. The hate and death threats are absolutely ridiculous and uncalled for, however.

I'm a black person on the internet. I'm well aware that the shut ins of tumblr love to nitpick anyone who disagrees with them because they can't feel powerful through anything else. I've gotten death threats over telling you people to wash your fucking legs.
People being mean to me is an every day occurrence. What isn't okay is to mock my people and the people I choose to support by flaunting your money in their faces. You're going to break down everything wrong with my sentence, but not have that same energy towards the people mocking Ukrainian civilians, enslaved people in Libya, and the genocide of Muslim people in Asia.
Every time we even try to discuss how Ao3 gets donates in the hundred of thousands for being a site that has BARELY been updated and been in beta for more than a decade nowâhere comes the dick riders and those who will miss the point bc of a âsyntax error.â
Like the fact of the matter is that these are the same people who will turn a blind eye to those who need money for groceries that barley go over 100 dollars because they have a fear of being âscammedâ but will gladly give money to a site that doesnât do shit.
Lets not get into how that same site lets the most awful shit stay so no one can be âcensoredâ but doesnât even allow you to block authors or permanent filter out certain tags and warnings. The most basic site should have those thing, hell even FFNet lets you block authors and that site is broke as hell!
People are allowed to side eye a fucking site that asks for money and doesnât do anything with it, when others have suffered and needed that money more.
Like I will say, you can spend your money on whatever you like! But that doesnât mean you are immune from being critiqued and judged for it.
