the REAL victim of the bite

Mike donning the mask of a fox, with a wide grin full of sharp teeth, to disguise his feelings of powerlessness as a teen. Taking out his frustrations on the one person he does have power over: his little brother.

That dynamic extending to the outward perception of William's and Mike's relationship— the family man trying his best and the troubled teen making a fuss over nothing. Predator and prey. Victim and persecutor. The masks they wear obscure the power imbalance and invert their positions in the relationship

After Mike faces the consequences of his actions, the mask drops. When he apologizes to his brother he's no longer wearing it. He spends the rest of his time on earth, alive and undead, separating himself from it as he attempts to make amends.

Yet he's still William's "fall guy." The scapegoat. The sacrificial lamb. He's viewed as the aggressor to his other victims until proven otherwise. All his life he's mistaken for his father. He dies because of it. And even in death, his perpetually rotting body mirrors his father's corpse trapped inside the Springbonnie suit. The very same suit that continues to obscure his father's identity to his victims in both life and death.

Imagine you’re Michael Afton. You spend years abused and used by your father, living in the shadows of your perfect sister that he favors so much more. Then when your father dies, so you try living up to his name, try to get your sister to join you, try to get some family back. But she rejects you for a man that is everything you are not. A man that—in your eyes—took all your family away from you.

And then you see your father again, you tell him how much you’ve been trying for him, but he rejects you too. For the same exact man. Because he’s just the BETTER Michael. He’s the one they pick.
