Sunrise + low tide at the Neskowin Ghost Forest.
Neskowin, Oregon.
There was a time several years ago when a big storm washed away a bunch of sand from the beach I used go to with my parents, revealing a ghost forest underneath. It would have been from the same earthquake that buried the trees in Neskowin (and most ghost forests in Oregon, Washington and northern California).
Conveniently I was with Geologist Dad at the time. I believe he said this would have happened around 1700, and we know this because of records from Japan of a tsunami with no corresponding earthquake.
Note: details might not be quite right because this was several years ago and I don’t have a great memory.
The Cascadia earthquake was indeed in 1700, specifically January 26, 1700 at approximately 9 PM Pacific Time. It was estimated at 8.7 to 9.2 in magnitude. And yes, Japanese tsunami records are how we’ve dated it so precisely. Indigenous oral traditions either support or fail to contradict the timing.
This was, of course, 326 years ago. It was caused by the Juan de Fuca subduction zone, which historically causes a similar massive earthquake every 300 to 900 years. We probably have another century or two until the next big one, but there’s a reason we have tsunami evacuation routes all along the coast!
The Juan de Fuca plate is disappearing under the North American plate and IIRC has only another 40 miles before it’s gone completely. The Juan de Fuca plate “catches” on the edge of the NA plate, forcing it back and up, and then the NA plate snaps back and down once the force builds up enough to overcome friction. Current estimate (again IIRC) are that it will drop about 30 feet.
