He was my manager in the company I am working with, when he quit, he decided to let me be part of his own business. We we’re like partners. I learned a lot from him and I admire his patience.

I did some stuff for him but I wasn’t paid a penny. I thought to myself that having him in my connections is basically his way of “paying” me. I did enjoy the first few months of it, but as time goes by, I’ve grown weary. I couldn’t offer a FREE service anymore and I couldn’t handle him being unresponsive most of the time.

He did not knew anything about these, of course. I am a people pleaser to the point that I wouldn’t reply “No, I can’t do it” and instead, I ignore messages.

But when I discovered he kicked me out without a word, it made me sad. I was hoping a continuous communication with someone I trust and respect. I was hoping that he would give me a gig in his (other) job he’s currently working in. I was hoping that even though I am of no help in his business - we’d still often ask how’s each others’ lives.

I am comforting myself to the fact that I was not at fault because I did some work in his business while he didn’t pay me.

Lesson learned?

1. Saying NO is a must. It might save future relationshops by instilling boundaries.

2. Don’t do FREE service especially if it eats up your time and you’re not happy doing it.

3. Communicate even if it’s hard and especially if it’s hard.

4. There are many people you can connect with. Just take a leap. You still can have access to far more resources and opportunities if you look hard enough.
