This adorable proposal.

There’s a somewhat new Chinese movie that came out called “错了性别，不错爱”. It’s actually one of the main reasons why I created this blog in the first place. I think this movie doesn’t have as popularity as it should, considering that it explores the social effects of a femme lesbian becoming open in a relationship with a butch girl in a college setting. We start off the movie with Xiao Rou (筱柔), the femme, showing attraction towards her roommate Mi Le (米乐) and vice versa. We also see that Xiao Rou has a male interest that she constantly has to fend off. Soon after, we already have a scene with Xiao Rou and Mi Le’s classmates gossiping about how they think Mi Le is a lesbian, because of her masculine appearance. They are quickly shut down by Xiao Rou, who reprimands them for assuming things and for viewing Mi Le as a lecherous person because of her sexuality. This part in particular is extremely satisfying, as Xiao Rou reminds them that other countries have legalized gay marriage and that it was low of them to be so homophobic. At the point where they said they were just kidding, she retorts that there is an extent to how much one can joke. The rest of the movie shows the development between Xiao Rou and Mi Le’s relationship and also the change in their classmates’ attitudes once they realize the two’s relationship. I don’t want to spoil it too much, but part of the reason why I enjoyed watching it was because it shows the difficulties with being a homosexual in a homophobic environment while maintaining the importance and happiness of love in a relationship. The title  “错了性别，不错爱” (cuo le xing bie, bu cuo ai) means “Mistaken sexuality, but not mistaken love.” I think it’s a pretty fitting name for the movie, and although the movie could have gotten deeper in depth with the individual characters, it’s still amazing that China came out with a pro-lesbian movie. I would definitely recommend it to everyone!
