as a former retired general of the court, callum's father found nothing more difficult than trying to figure out a way to relate to his son, all of the hopes and expectations of having another boy he can help train and build up to get to where he once was as a family legacy, and callum did what was expected, at least what he could get away with while silently dragging his feet, learning the bare minimum of his training and easily taking it when his sparing partner beat him, perfectly content with just sitting in the sidelines with his books and letting a caterpillar inch up his arm with gentle wonder as all his cousins and their friends continued gleefully. and truth be told he really did prefer his mother at the end of the day anyway. she wasn't as gruff as everyone else, allowing him to be who he was with no expectations, and always willing to listen to all the rich histories that he read about in his books, that sweet nurturing support only growing his passions and interest in it all, no matter how different that made him in the donelly clan, a large extended family filled with soldiers.
and once she grew ill callum was there at her bedside every day, doing all he could to give back to the woman that had given him everything. but the healing magic and medicinal meals really only went so far. when she she finally passed it felt like he had lost the most important person in the world to him, now he and his dad the only immediate family they had left. the strain on their relationship now weighed with what they had lost, but it was what callum had needed to finally tell his father he wasn’t a soldier nor did he have any real desire to be. It didn’t take much while begrudgingly training to realize this wasn’t how he wanted to settle issues, finally leading him to make the decision to become emissary once getting the chance, ready to put himself forth as the representative of his court, working alongside those within the inner circle including the high lady zaina and current commander jamie, who he’s had by his side for as long as he could remember. things are good...he has a job that he strongly believes in and has found others who appreciate him as he is, even if the current relation to his father isn’t where he would like it to be.
