Ichigo’s character arc was killed as well as his hero’s journey by the ending of Bleach.
Ichigo started out the series saying he wanted to be a normal person with a normal life and that he didn’t want to see ghosts anymore and he only cared about his family, that he only cared to be strong enough to protect them.
His refusal to dye his hair black and his propensity to get in fights belied this.
Black hair would have made him fit in. Not getting into fights would have made him an average student. Simply running away or beating his opponents instead of savaging them with shattered teeth and broken bones would have been enough to defend himself from bullies. He always had the option to pretend he couldn’t see ghosts like Karin did, but he chose to set his hand on the head of a dead girl comfortingly as he stood over a group of boys who’d desecrated her offering of flowers and shouted at them to apologize to her.
Every day in little ways he went directly against “normal” on purpose but a wish to be normal is what he told himself and everyone around him. “I want to be average” he said, “I’m different” his actions told.
Then Rukia came into his life and upended things. Showed him a whole new world of power and fighting, a place where the person he actually was belonged. He’d never fit into the human world, but in the shinigami world he thrived.
He went on a journey of self discovery and self understanding. He came to accept that, yeah, he did like fighting. It wasn’t just self defense, he fought because he wanted to win and always had. He found his heart and desire to protect were much, much bigger than he’d thought. He could acknowledge he couldn’t protect everyone, but the number of people he wanted to protect grew large and his desire for power with it.
Ichigo had to accept himself as a battle-hungry fighter, a shinigami, a soul born from a hollow with the lingering bloodlust and savagery that came with it. All along what he’d had to accept was that he was different and extraordinary and a person who wanted big things, not an average guy who wanted an average life.
Ichigo got his stated wish once, a complete loss of his power and an open doorway to normalcy, and came to understand that he hated it. He was miserable. Life as an average, ordinary person was something to be endured, not a life that made him happy. The first chance he got to escape that life, he took it. When he learned a tiny scrap of power could be returned to him, the first hint of a way out of normalcy, he took it even though he was deeply suspicious of the man offering it.
Being a shinigami and fighting and winning and standing at the top with the most powerful people in the world and changing the world is what made him feel happy and alive and just when he reached a pinnacle, the peak his strength could be without experience and time to make it richer and….
Ichigo semi-retires from being a shinigami, gets a job as a nobody translator and gets a wife he leaves at home to do laundry while he hangs out anywhere else but home and a kid he doesn’t interact with and doesn’t seem to care about since he doesn’t show any concern or interest about where he is or what he’s doing ever, except to apologize to everyone about what an annoyance the kid has to be.
A bog-standard man working as just another cog in society.
Ichigo literally ends up living the life he mistakenly thought he wanted before he knew himself and what he really wanted, but the story tries to sell this as a happy ending for him instead of a gross tragedy.
I’m going to be short because I can’t put into words how much I agree with this, but… Everyone who defends that horrible ending? You confuse the hell out of me, because I wonder if we’ve seen the same story? I wonder if any of you actually understood Ichigo AT ALL!
“How but his family!”
Senkaimon exists.
“But Inoue…”
That’s not love! That’s obsession with the Knight In Shining Armour, coupled with resignation to… something… I don’t know… But it’s bad!
“His friends!”
That he never truly sees again!
How many of you have/will have the same friends in ten years from now? Especially school mates?
“He liked school! And literature!”
He also likes to kick ass and hang with the Shinigami… Your point?
That ending was so fucking bad, me, who’s got a mediocre life, wanted to scream!
See what happens when I’m fucking sad? I start reblogging Bleach meta on my main..
BLEACH: Diamond Dust Rebellion Novel Translation

two hours after.
The chime signaling 6 pm rang throughout the rain soaked city.
(Man, it's late. I wonder if Yuzu's worried....)
The black haired girl carrying a blue umbrella quickly went on her way home. She is Ichigo's younger sister, Kurosaki Karin. She thought of going home while it was still bright out, but while playing games at a friend's house, it had turned completely dark.
「...Hm?」
Nearing the Karakura High School road, she faintly felt a familiar presence.
What came to mind was the silver haired boy who once helped them with soccer.
「Toshiro! Are you here?」
She called as she went off the road, going into the wet forest. Without regard for her favorite sneakers getting dirty, she continued deeper into the forest.
「Cold...」
As the presence felt stronger, the temperature was dropping. Her hand holding the umbrella (handle) trembled.
「...There!」
Clutching the beat up mantle the masked man wore, Hitsugaya was there, lying down, buried in the grass. Around was the blood flowing from Hitsugaya, melting, forming a red puddle.
Karin immediately let go of the umbrella, ran up to him and went to shake Hitsugaya's shoulder.
「Toshiro! What happened?!」
No reaction.
She turned Hitsugaya over who was lying face down, and put her hand near his mouth.
(Thank God... He's breathing.)
page 38
With a heave-ho, Karin piggy-backed the slightly shorter than her Hitsugaya, and stood up. They went down the muddy slope carefully. Hitsugaya's shihakusho was frozen in many places, and with every step, sounds of ice cracking and breaking can be heard.
As the lights of the Kurosaki Clinic came into sight, Hitsugaya, on her back, stirred.
「Kusa...ka...」
He whispered, his face contorted in pain.
「...Kusaka? What the hell is that?」
Even with Karin's (repeated) inquiry, Hitsugaya did not speak a word.

It was a different day when Hitsugaya woke up on the bed in Ichigo's room. He blinked a number of times, clearing his vision.
(This is… Kurosaki’s…)
The ceiling, light, window, desk.
It was a room he's seen before, visiting the human world with the Hitsugaya vanguard troop.
The light is yet to be switched on, with the only light source coming from the light from the corridor, spilling through a slight opening of the door, making the room dim.
「Ugh... ngh...」
Hitsugaya grimaced in pain while in bed, his upper body coming to life. The wound on his abdomen hurt. Checking his abdomen and bodily state, he noticed his captain haori was gone, and his shoulder to chest was covered in bandages.
「Hey.」
He raised his head at the voice, and there, Ichigo was standing outside the door.
「Kurosaki...」
「You were passed out around here, Karin carried you and brought you in.」 Ichigo said while entering the room, sitting down, and looking at Hitsugaya.
「The mangled mantle you had and your haori, they're folded right here. And your sword, it's right there.」
Hitsugaya's eyes followed to the places Ichigo had pointed out. The mantle and haori on top of the desk, and Hyourinmaru beside it, each in its own place.
「I see. ....My bad.」
Hitsugaya's pale figure due to loss of large amounts of blood, seemed to pale even more in the dark.
「The onmitsukido was searching for you.」
「Yeah.」
「What do you mean, just "yeah"?!」
He met the pissed off Ichigo's line of sight, and Hitsugaya hung his head down.
「What are you hiding?」
He stared at his hands, linked together on his lap.
page 57
「.....I have troubled you. I give you my thanks.」
Hitsugaya looked down, and avoids the question.
「Why the hell did you try to go alone? What are you brooding over?」
Ichigo pressed on.
「What the hell is "Kusaka"?」
Hitsugaya heard it, and in surprise, raised his head.
「Where did you...」
「Karin told me about it. You were having a nightmare, and mumbled that, she said.」
Karin, who carried Hitsugaya, and went home covered in blood, rain, and mud, tired and on the verge of passing out, called Ichigo and told him it was a word he said.
「What do you mean, "Kusaka"? Is it a person's name? Is it related to the person who stole the Ouin, the one you were chasing after?」
Hitsugaya silently shut his eyes, responding to the rapid succession of questions.
「.....It's the name of someone who was killed.」
「Killed...? By whom?」
toshiro and karin having more chemistry with each other in two fillers than every couple in bleach combined together 😵💫

I remember when I also used to have weird takes on Bleach's characters and storyline only based on my Eurocentric upbringing and views...
Everyone would benefit from researching Japanese culture, both Edo Period, The 80s and 90s and the current state of the Nation.
Might give you a different opinion on that stupid, fucking Manga Ending...
"Why do you hate the thought of Ichigo living a normal life in the World of the Living?"
Because of Bushido and the grip it has on the 21st century Japan still...
Because their work ethics are deadly.
Because society couldn't give a shit about young people.
Because you can't forced someone's who's a quasi deity to become an empty version of himself.
Because that ending showed he didn't love his life, his job, his wife, his kid, his friends... It was hollow...
Because it all feels so fucking suffocating.
Because it feels like one day Shirosaki will lose his shit, take over Ichigo and kill the first person that annoys Ichigo.
Because it looks like slow suicide.
Because he's an anonymous nobody there. He's powerless. He's empty.
Because you guys argue that the Soul Society is a militaristic, feudalistic society, but fail to understand the enormous impact and importance Ichigo has as an individual there.
In the Soul Society he can exact radical change from the get go.
And no, fuck "living a normal life first". He's never been normal. He tried to fit because he knew he wasn't like everyone else.
He thrived in the Soul Society.
He became a pale, souless imitation of himself in the World of the Living...
Me, watching the world go to shit in real time and being aware of what the new PM has been doing to Japan:
"I WAS FUCKING RIGHT AND I'LL SAY IT AGAIN!"
"...but god forbid I like the thing I like..."

I also used another picrew to give it another try at the Kuchiki kids:

Reblog the writers’ fortune cookie for luck!
Guys I reblogged this and then wrote an 8000 word story I didn’t even have a solid plan for. Reblog this shit.
I ain’t risking it.
🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Tell you what, if this reblog can break through the headache and brain fog I’ve had going for two days, I’ll believe in it.
I’m curious
Please... I need to finish the fucking vows part...
Guess who's been having way too much fun with the Lady Of Hera 2 picrew?
Minako Kuchiki
Sakura Kuchiki
Kaede Kuchiki
Byakuren Kurosaki
Ichika Kurosaki
Tried the Gentleman Of Hera, but I don't really like the hard edged faces... And unfortunately there's still no option for different face shapes...
So, I'm not liking this attempt to imagine Kōsuke Kuchiki... I wanted a rounder, softer face...
Ah well!
Toshiro having a bit of an Edward Elric moment since Byakuya made him feel all insecure :"D

Kuchiki Byakuya | Bleach TYBW Cour 4 Ep. 03 "Blood of my bone"
I remember when the music in Bleach had meaning...
And now we have Viz and Studios Pierrot, and whomever fucking else makes decisions on the Soundtrack, just getting Treachery in the background when Byakuya came to save Tōshirō from Gerrard?
Fuck you!
