i don't fully know how to articulate this but the amount of ableds that seem to only like disabled people who consistently make fun of themselves really rubs me the wrong way. "oh she's so fun to be around, she jokes about her struggles all the time, she's so confident", "he's really into self-irony and doesn't take things too seriously, its great haha", "they have such a positive vibe, they're always laughing and making fun of their disability instead of complaining, its sooo entertaining" this is brought up almost every single time someone mentions a (likable and/or successful) disabled person, and it's presented almost like an aspiration. something you should strive towards if you're in a similar situation. as if it's the ultimate end goal of self-acceptance. it's so odd. to me it almost feels like they're either wildly uncomfortable and desperate to diffuse the tension or don't actually view us as equals and are searching for any opportunity to express that without social consequences. it's not acceptable to laugh at or make fun of a disabled person unless they initiate it first, because that's essentially them giving you permission (or so you'd think based on many people's behavior). and like don't get me wrong, i'm not saying disabled people aren't allowed to cope with humor or find joy in this kind of thing. or even that an able-bodied person isn't allowed to ever laugh at those jokes. it's great if this dynamic genuinely works for them. i'm just tired of hearing abled people's opinions on it all the time. it's not about you. it's not our job to make you more comfortable with our existence, and we shouldn't have to coat our painful life stories in funny jokes to make them more palatable. we're not your little circus monkeys. either grow up, accept that life fucking sucks for many people and help advocate for our communities or just leave. bye!

honestly i dont think its normal to be under so much pressure in school/university that you repeatedly have mental breakdowns over it and damage your health, and im tired of everyone pretending its not a big deal

at the risk of sounding like a pouting 6th grader, i genuinely think "academic trauma" (or something of the like) should be a real, widely recognized term. trauma relating to or around the topic of learning and academic environments. no, not "oh my gosh, so many letters in math! how weird and scary, im traumatized now!!", but actual negative experiences in the context of learning that severely impede your ability to do so later in life, even once you're out of the traumatic environment/situation.

i will never get a voice assistant speaker. i will never enable face ID. i will never consent to a cloud backup of my devices. i will never send selfies to an AI chatbot. i will never get a smartwatch with built-in health trackers. i will never tag my location online. i will never send my DNA to a company for ancestry testing. i will never get a non-medically essential brain implant. i will never own meta glasses. i will never install "smart" security cameras around my home. i will never use AI in place of a search engine. i will never give social media corpos my ID, or my money via subscriptions. i will resist all of this shit for as long and as hard as i possibly can, and you probably should too.

"wow you're so caring and empathetic, how profound" in response to someone not supporting things that are blatantly exploitative when its kind of just basic fucking logic. everyone knows exploitation is bad. virtually every sane adult also knows, at least to some extent, that exploitation is a big part of many non-essential modern conveniences. so why the fuck would you still use/support it if you've got other options? even if you're completely incapable of feeling empathy (which in and of itself does not make you a bad person, to be clear) you should still be able to put two and two together. its really not that crazy of a concept.

What disability looks like: "I can't walk so i have to use a wheelchair" What it's actually like: "I can't walk so i have to use a wheelchair. i need to lay down because my lower back feels like it's on fire. if i sneeze too hard i might pinch a nerve between my ribs. my shoulder never fully healed from that one injury. i get headaches if i sleep wrong. something in my right arm hurts if i put weight on it. clothes never fit quite right because of my spine. i've learned to move slowly so i don't pull any muscles. sometimes my bones ache when the weather shifts. my legs are too weak for heavier shoes. i can never reach most door handles. i have to assume every new place i'm interested in is inaccessible because it probably is. why is everyone looking at me like that? how am i meant to respond to these questions? would it really have been that hard to just put things lower? am i supposed to be happy with this? oh, they finally picked up my call! what's that? there should be accessible seats available, because you're legally required to have them, but you have no information about this and don't know what you're doing because you don't actually care about disabled people? and of course there's no ramp nearby. great, okay, got it."
