whereas other forms of media have greater barriers to accessibility:

~all the piracy sites shutting down recently

~unlimited ads everywhere

~higher monthly subscriptions

~locking content behind paywalls

~limited editions and supply of certain media forms

~restricting content as 'exclusive' for certain readers

i used to be interested in pursuing scientific and academic research, but i changed my mind because of how frustrating slow and inaccessible it is. it would take years and years to find viable results to publish in a paper only for it to be accessible to a certain few (usually other researchers) who pay for journal subscriptions. and then the general public would not know of the news until much later. and then the benefits that the research could be used to help someone in need would not happen until much much later, maybe even over the course of someone's lifetime or after their death.

now after writing fics for almost a year, i like to think that there's more people out there reading my fics than any scientific research paper that i would ever publish, even for a freaking living.
