UNVEILING FASHION: THE EVOLUTION OF BELTS

FROM ANCIENT ROOTS TO MODERN TRENDS

The practice of wearing layered belts has appeared in different forms throughout history, evolving from ancient utilitarian and status symbols to a distinct fashion statement that has recently re-emerged as a major trend.

Ancient and Medieval Origins

Earlier "layered" or multiple belts were used for functional and status-oriented purposes:

Ancient Military Use: Roman soldiers used to wear a primary belt called a 'cingulum' around the waist to hold a dagger and a second belt, a 'balteus', over the shoulder to carry a small sword.

Medieval Women's Practicality: In the Middle Ages, women used belts to carry purses and pouches through openings in their dresses. They were sometimes worn in pairs or threes for this functional purpose just like modern handbags.

Modern Fashion Trends

The concept of wearing multiple belts for purely aesthetic reasons, rather than utility, is a relatively recent phenomenon:

Early 2000s (Y2K Era): The "useless belt" was a prominent feature of Noughties maximalism, where thin, often metallic or patent leather belts, were layered or worn pointlessly through belt loops with no structural need, purely for "vibes" and to add texture or break up silhouettes. The style was very much in line with the boho-chic trend.

2020s Resurgence: The layered belt trend has made a strong comeback in recent years. In June 2022, model Bella Hadid famously wore two contrasting belts (one silver, one gold) simultaneously, sparking a viral moment that brought the style back into the fashion spotlight.

Runway adoption: It may seem like this trend appeared overnight, but its roots have been growing for a while. Miu Miu, always ahead of the curve, made layered belts a key feature of its spring/summer 2025 collection, styling them stacked on top of dresses, wound around skirts and cinched over swimsuits, this playful trend permeated the Italian brand's collection, adding dimension to the already assorted collection.

Contrasting colors are juxtaposed in chic Miu Miu fashion by combining tightly layered mixed metal belts and tight silhouettes.
