props to “tangled” for having an abuse victim and abuser say “i love you” often. abuse is complex, and, if a dynamic looks healthy, it is not always so.
props to “tangled” for having eugene, someone the audience can interpret as “having it worse”, sympathize with rapunzel without ever guilt-tripping her for her privilege of (dubious) safety. abuse is still abuse, even if basic human needs are being met.
props to “tangled” for not demonizing rapunzel for still loving and instinctively reaching out for her abuser even after she killed her boyfriend. caring for an abuser is not a sign of brokenness, but of the amount of love you are capable of.
