After school came faster than you expected.
The rest of day felt off—like everything you did was just something to get through until that moment.
But has You stood by the gates longer than you should have, overthinking every possible outcome.
Standing there like he hadn’t just completely derailed your thoughts.
“You’re here,” he said, a small smile forming.
“You too,” you replied, trying to sound more calm than you felt.
For a second, neither of you moved.
Then Chris nodded toward the street. “Come on.”
“Where are we going then?” you asked, falling into step beside him.
“Just… somewhere,” he said.
He laughed lightly. “You’ll see.”
You ended up walking more than you expected.
Past shops, quiet streets, places you’d never really paid attention to before.
There were quiet moments—but they felt… okay.
You pulled yours back instinctively.
But he didn’t say anything.
He just slowed his pace slightly so you were walking closer again.
“You’re really quiet,” he said after a while.
“So are you,” you replied.
“Yeah, but that’s because I’m thinking.”
He smiled. “I’m serious.”
“…About what?” you asked.
He glanced at you, then away again. “This.”
“Yeah,” he said quietly. “You. Me. Right now.”
You didn’t know what to say to that.
“I feel like I’m gonna mess it up somehow.”
You took another step before realizing, then turned back toward him.
“Why would you mess it up?” he asked.
You shrugged slightly, hugging your arms to yourself. “Because I always do.”
“I do,” he said, stepping a little closer.
“You showed up,” he added. “That already proves it.”
The world felt… smaller suddenly.
Like it was just the two of you standing there.
“You’re not what I expected,” Chris said.
You frowned slightly. “Is that a bad thing?”
“No,” he said immediately. “It’s just… different.”
“Better.” “Better than what I’ve had before”.
Your heart didn’t know how to handle that.
“I don’t think you mean that,” you said, almost automatically.
“I do,” he repeated, more serious now.
Close enough that you could feel how nervous he suddenly was too.
Which made you feel… less alone.
Neither of you said anything.
Because there wasn’t anything left to say.
Like he was giving you time to pull away.
Like he was afraid you’d disappear if he moved too fast.
You froze for half a second—
Then relaxed just slightly, your heart racing so fast it felt unreal.
Just enough to mean something.
You could feel everything like he was trying to taste you, both of you moving perfectly.
When he pulled back, neither of you moved.
You didn’t even open your eyes right away.
“…Okay,” you breathed quietly.
Chris let out a small, nervous laugh. “Okay?”
You nodded, finally looking at him. “Yeah.”
A tiny smile slipped onto your face.
He smiled back—genuine, softer than you’d ever seen before.
“No,” he said. “You didn’t.”
At school, chris didn’t show.
The kind you always had, couldn’t fully hear—but you felt them.
By your last class, it was worse.
Then quickly looking away.
You sat down at your desk, trying to ignore it. Like always.
Trying to convince yourself you were overthinking.
A folded piece of paper landed on your desk.
Your stomach tightened as you slowly opened it.
“He made it believable didn’t he?.”
Your chest started to feel tight.
“You really thought he liked you?”
You couldn’t read the rest.
Everything from the party to yesterday—
The walk.
The way he looked at you.
The kiss.
Suddenly didn’t feel the same.
You spotted one of his friends watching you.
Everyone else started packing up, chairs scraping, voices filling the room—but it all sounded distant.
Like you were underwater.
Your fingers tightened around the note.
Like maybe it would change.
By the time you stood up, your chest felt tight.
You stumbled out the class room
You didn’t even fully know where you were going.
But You found Chris faster than you expected.
He looked up when he heard your footsteps.
And the second he saw your face—
“What’s this?” you cut in.
Your voice didn’t even sound like yours.
Chris frowned slightly. “What?”
You held up the note, your hand shaking just enough to give you away.
“This,” you said. “What is it?”
And that was all the answer you needed.
“…Where did you get that?” he asked quietly.
That hurt more than anything.
“So it’s true,” you said.
Your throat tightened, but you forced the words out anyway. “It was a bet.”
“Y/n” he stepped forward.
“Don’t,” you said quickly.
“What?” you snapped, your voice breaking for the first time. “It wasn’t exactly that? It wasn’t supposed to go that far? It was just a joke?”
Each word hit harder than the last.
Chris shook his head. “No, that’s not”
“Then what was it?” you demanded.
Your eyes stung, when you looked away, laughing quietly—but there was no humor in it.
“I knew it,” you whispered. “I literally knew you was out of my league.”
“That’s not fair,” he said, his voice more urgent now. “You don’t know everything.”
you shot back, finally looking at him again. “Because right now it looks exactly like what I said it would be.”
Chris ran a hand through his hair, frustrated—not at you, but at himself.
“It was a bet,” he admitted.
The words landed like a punch.
“Okay,” you said. “Thanks for being honest.”
You turned slightly, like you were about to leave—
“But that’s not what this is anymore,” he said quickly.
“Don’t,” you said, quieter now. “Please don’t do that.”
“I’m not lying,” he said.
You shook your head. “You have to say that.”
“I don’t have to do anything,” he replied. “I’m saying it because it’s true.”
You turned back then, tears finally slipping down before you could stop them.
“Was the kiss part of it too?” you asked.
That one broke something in him.
“No,” Chris said immediately. “No, he lied.
that wasn’t a part of anything.”
“How am I supposed to believe you?” your voice cracked.
“I don’t know,” he admitted. “But I need you to try.”
You laughed through the tears, shaking your head.
“Of course,” you said. “Of course you want me to believe you.”
“I told you,” you cut in. “I said I didn’t belong in your world.”
“That’s not what this is about!”
“It is!” you snapped. “Because to you, this is a joke you can walk away from. Get the money from your bet. For me—” your voice broke again, “—for me it wasn’t.”
Chris stepped closer again, more carefully this time.
“It’s not a joke to me,” he said, softer now. “Not anymore.”
“Not anymore,” you repeated.
That hurt in a different way.
“I didn’t plan this,” he continued. “I didn’t plan you.”
You wiped your face quickly, trying to pull yourself together.
“But you still started it,” you said. “And you didn’t tell me.”
He didn’t have an argument for that.
“I can’t do this,” you said finally.
Chris’s expression dropped. “Don’t say that.”
“I mean it,” you said. “I can’t sit there and wonder what’s real and what’s not every time you talk to me.”
“It is real,” he insisted.
“Maybe now,” you said. “But it didn’t start that way.”
That was the part he couldn’t fix.
“I wish you never came up to me that day,” you said quietly.
Chris didn’t move this time.
If he pushed now, you’d just run further.
