Take TIME for Recovery
TIME = Train Intensely Move Everyday
People who have had a stroke shouldn’t just be thrown on the junk heap.
Jean (ARM Project Member)
Because Lora cannot grip with her affected hand, she has to attach herself to devices using an elastic strap. -To hold the cane in place, Lora squeezes it between her legs. -She then drapes a small portion of the elastic strap over the top of the cane. -Lora places her affected hand over the strap holding it in place. -Next she pulls the lose end from underneath, towards her body, and over her hand and repeats to tighten. - Finally, she fastens with the velcro end. You can find these elastic straps at most 99cent stores or you can buy them online. Fighting Spasticity After Stroke
In this stroke recovery exercise Lora places her affected hand on top of the ball. She then spread her fingers as far apart from each other as she can and holds them in place with her unaffected hand. She then rocks the ball ball and forth. Repetition, repetition, repetition...
Core strengthening, arm straightening, calf stretching, and working on balance. This stroke recovery exercise has it all!
Turning Ordinary into Extraordinary
Here at Stroke Nation we try to do all recovery on a shoestring budget by improvising ways to turn ordinary things into effective therapy tools. A lot of our items come straight from the 99 cent store. For everything that you can't find at the 99cent store, amazon has been our best bet. The following is a breakdown of everything we use and where you can get it...
99 cent store: Hula Hoop Touch Light Beach Ball Hand sized Ball Oball (if you're lucky they might have these. they are great for working on the hand) Elastic Bandage Amazon.com: Swiss Gear Walking Stick (2 for $25) KT Pro Kinesio Tape ($20. It may cost more than other brands and types but it stays on 5 times as long. Make Sure it is KT PRO Synthetic) Oball ($8) Adjustible Cane Benik Corporation 1-(800)-442-8910: W-711Forearm Benik Brace ($100. These are very effective for stablizing the wrist making exercise easier. It also comes with velco straps allowing you to attach yourself to a device if you don't have grip): http://myrangemaster.com/shoulder-pulleys Shoulder Pulley With Metal Bracket (Around $10. The one with the metal bracket make it really easy to set up) Thanks for all the support and let me know if you have any questions.
AÂ simple, functional, and effective stroke recovery exercise you can do at home.
Hula Hoop Bus Driving Exercise:
Imagining the hula hoop is the steering wheel of a bus that she's driving down a winding road, Lora mobilizes her shoulder, straightens her elbow, and uses her abdominal rotators and core muscles. This stroke recovery exercise also helps sitting balance and weight shifting as she move toward then away from her affected side. In the beginning, Lora used a strap to hold her affected hand in place, but she no long has the need to do this.
