A major UK interconnector project had to be redirected after a public outcry that it would go straight through the âgraveâ of Dobby, a fictional elf from the Harry Potter books, it has been revealed.
The story of one of the most unlikely objections to a major energy infrastructure project was recounted by Simon Ludlam, CEO of advisory firm Etchea Energy, on The Energy Revolution podcast in an episode published on Wednesday.
The interconnector in question was Greenlink, a 504MW link between the Irish and British electricity networks that went live last year. The link runs from the north of Wales to the north of Dublin, enabling wind and solar power to be sent across the Irish Sea as needed.
Unknown to Ludlam, this dune is where the 'grave' of Dobby â the elf and friend of Harry Potter in the world-renowned book series â is located.
After the BBC report aired, Ludlam recalled his team started getting âhundreds of calls, [and] I mean hundreds of callsâ from people concerned the cable was going âstraight through Dobby's grave.â
To this day, Harry Potter fans have decorated the dune where Dobby's grave supposedly lies with painted pebbles, marked stones and socks â the latter item famously symbolising that Dobby was a âfree elfâ.
âAnd so my colleague Tom, who works in permitting, said, âSimon, weâre going to have to respond to these calls.â And I said, âwell, Tom, Iâm super busy.â And he goes, âno, no, we really have to respond to this,ââ recalled Ludlam.
âI said, âWell, Tom, what are they on about?ââ. On being informed the outcry was over the cable going through Dobbyâs grave, Ludlam said: âDobby? Whoâs Dobby?â
