beginner grammar: the grammar is used in this specific way. here are some simple examples to demonstrate the point.
intermediate grammar: ehh actually the grammar’s kinda complicated and it has a lot of different uses and exceptions. but there are still general rules you can follow.
advanced grammar: this language is a lawless wasteland where rules are simultaneously both arbitrary and incredibly specific and only strictly adhered to by 32% of the population anyway. but if you use them incorrectly you’ll sound awkward and unnatural. good luck!
i’m watching this documentary about halloween and there’s a part where they’re explaining that ghost stories got really popular around the civil war no one could really deal with how many people went off and died and

“the first ghost stories were really about coming home”

#but wow let me tell you about how the american civil war changed the whole culture of grief and death #because before that people died at home mostly #where their family saw them die and held their body and had proof they were really dead and it was a process #but during the war people left and never came home their bodies never came back there was no proof #people died in new horrific ways on the battlefield literally vaporized by cannonballs or lost in swamps and eaten by wild animals #and there were NO BODIES to send home #and people simply couldn’t grasp that their son or father or husband was really gone #there are stories about people spending months searching for their loved ones #convinced they couldn’t be dead if there were no body they were simply lost or hurt and they needed to be saved and brought home #embalming also really started during the civil war as a way for bodies to be brought home as intact as possible #wow i just wowowow the culture of death and grief and stuff during this time period is fascinating and sad #history (via souryellows)

IIRC, the Civil War also played a huge part in forming the modern American conception of heaven as this nice, domestic place where you’re reunited with your loved ones. People (particularly mothers) responded to the trauma of brother-killing-brother by imagining an afterlife in which families would once again be happy together.

reblogging because, as a us history phd student, i want to say YAY for how much of this is totally on point. i also want to rec the book where a lot of this is covered very, very well, which is Drew Gilpin Faust’s “This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War.”
a lot of books on the Civil War are deadly dull because they’re about battles and shit, but as a transformative moment in mindset and ideology, it becomes *fascinating*
the other book I’d even more highly rec is David W. Blight’s “Race and Reunion,” which is about how the “(white) brother against (white) brother” image of the war was invented and how throwing African Americans to the merciless viciousness of post-Reconstruction racist whites was part of constructing this “oh everybody was white men and everybody was noble let’s celebrate them all” approach to Civil War remembrance

Also, look for David Blights recordings of his Yale lecture series on The Civil War. 21 hours of class lectures, and its FASCINATING. He barely touches on the battles other than to use them as timestamps as to what was going on. Most of it focuses on what the mindset of everyone was going into the war, and what happened on the way out. It’s an amazing series that will change your entire perception of the war - how it happened, and how it wasn’t going to be possible to avoid it, because of the inherent evil of slavery and how it was destroying damn near *everyone* except rich white people.

there is a very real tendency of teenagers with anxiety disorders self diagnosing with considerably more stigmatized and impairing mental illnesses (e.g. schizophrenia, DID, personality disorders), but the best response to that isn't to get angry with them for "appropriating" lol. instead you show them coping resources for the problems they're actually having and deemphasize diagnostic categories in general. if an 18 year old is claiming to have alzheimer's, they're probably making an innocent mistake and are in genuine distress. be kind.
Also I think this trend comes, at least in part, from how brushed aside anxiety disorders can be. If your parents and teachers dismiss you with 'oh everyone feels anxious', then inevitably you're going to start thinking that there must be something else going on with you
as we’re nearing the end of the semester, a lot of people (myself included) are cramming for an overload of assignments and finals. if this is you, here’s a quick reminder to please take care of yourself. take some intermittent breaks, do a couple stretches, stay hydrated. try to get in your 8 hours. i am very proud of you for coming so far and i love you 💕
Now that college students no longer have access to their libraries in the same way we used to and have to do most of our learning at home it would be just terrible if we all knew about https://1lib.eu/ a website which has books on basically every topic ever available for free including college textbooks. Imagine if people were researching their thesis without paying for it.

Tartar Mosque (Minsk, Belarus) - Monika Bulaj
The Belorussia Tartars are an incredible synthesis between Christianity and Islam. They read the Koran in Slavic, written in Arabic letters. They make use of incense in their Mosques, and spread it with the same passion as the Popes. They sing the Salah, the Muezzin prayers following the Byzantine polyphonic music. They cover the bodies of the dead with fragments of their Sacred Books, challenging one of the strictest Islamic taboos, that forbids one to set the Koran under the ground. But there is more: the sins of the dead can be alleviated by the living, with the same Catholic logic of indulgences. Once a year they visit the graves of their dead to share food with them. They cry and talk, as the Belorussian farmers of the good old times. They pray only on Fridays, but for hours, much longer than any other Muslims. They have survived the darkest years of Stalinism. They paid unaffordable taxes to the regime and have managed to always keep their Mosques open.
Things That Weren't Invented/Discovered By White People: Scientific and Mathematical Theories Edition
Heliocentrism: the astronomical model in which the Earth and other planets revolve around the Sun. We typically learn that it was invented by Copernicus and/or Galileo in the 16th century CE; in reality, heliocentrism is mentioned in the Aitareya Brahmana, an ancient Indian text c. 600 BCE.
Atomism: the theory that the world is composed of fundamental indivisible components. While the Greeks did independently come up with this theory in the 5th century BCE, Indian philosophy worked with atomic theory as early as the 9th century BCE.
Algebra: the study and manipulation of mathematical symbols. The title of "The Father of Algebra" had also previously gone to a Greek named Diophantus. However, a Persian man named Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī (last name also sometimes transliterated as Algorithmi, so you see where the names for 'algebra' and 'algorithm' come from) was the first to treat algebra as an independent discipline (rather than associated with geometry).
