lucy  sighs  at  the  touch  of  his  lips  on  her  shoulder  .   her  arm  rises  ,   feeling  for  his  cheek  behind  her  .   she  is  pressed  flush  against  him  ,   her  back  to  his  chest  .   giles  has  both  arms  looped  tight  around  her  middle  .

and  he  kisses  ,   slow  and  soft  down  the  length  of  her  arm  .   lucy’s  mad  grab  for  something  solid  and  familiar  has  created  more  than  ideal  circumstances  for  him  .   and  the  girl  who  can  always  find  beautiful  words  to  fit  between  her  teeth  and  tongue  is  rendered  speechless  .

      her sentiment that seemingly comes out of NOWHERE prompts dwayne to grin - and it easily mirrors lucy’s. he takes in the way her speech is just a bit more slurred than usual, plus her half-empty glass of wine, and it’s not hard to deduce that she’s quite the HAPPY DRUNK. why is that so fitting ?

𝐇𝐈𝐒  𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐃  𝐃𝐎𝐆  𝐈𝐒  𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘  𝐅𝐎𝐍𝐃  𝐎𝐅  𝐒𝐂𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐒  𝐁𝐄𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐃  𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐄𝐀𝐑  .   she  is  reminded  very  gently  of  moriarty  ,   her  great  ,  grey  beast  of  a  wolfhound  who  would  often  rather  sleep  than  do  much  else  .   lucy  speaks  to  john’s  friend  like  she  would  a  human  baby  ,   with  a  tone  that  glows  neon  and  sweet  .

you  are  the  sweetest  little  thing  ,   not  so  scary  in  the  least  ,   who  couldn’t  love  such  a  precious  face  ?   lucy  is  pulled  from  a  trance  when  she’s  spoken  to  ,   lifting  her  head  .   she’s  still  smiling  ,   still  absent - mindedly  smoothing  her  hand  over  the  dog’s  head  and  neck  .   she  makes  a  noise  like  a  scoff  ,   there  is  humour  in  it  .

her  tea  is  set  aside  ,   she  looks  at  him  with  a  frank  concern  that  seems  unnatural  for  her  often  untroubled  face  .   loss  ,   destitution  ,   isolation  .   she  cannot  imagine  for  a  second  how  long  he’s  spent  trying  to  convince  himself  that  it  was  all  meant  to  be  .   

“    who  knows  what  kind  of  man  you  might  have  been  without  it  ,   petal  ?    ”    but  lucy’s  insistence  feels  like  only  a  precursor  to  a  larger  thought  .    “    we  cannot  say  if  it  did  ,   but  you  are  a  fine  man  and  i  am  unashamed  to  tell  you  as  much  .    still  ,   i  feel  i  ought  to  remind  you  that  the  worst  parts  of  your  life  ,   while  they  made  have  bolstered  character  ,   were  undeserved  .    ”

she  hopes  ,   as  she  stares  at  him  that  jacob  might  finally  push  through  the  wall  that  holds  him  hostage  .   that  he  might  see  with  his  own  eyes  how  deeply  she  still  loves  him  .   even  after  all  this  time  ,   even  after  a  mistake  so  cruel  lucy  shudders  to  think  of  it  .

her  breathing  is  faint  and  strained  .   she  feels  dizzy  ,   considers  stepping  towards  him  to  make  a  point  through  proximity  .   but  when  she  does  ,   she  feels  the  weight  of  the  world  box  her  about  the  ears  .   lucy  stumbles  ,   still  holding  the  necklace  to  her  heart  and  she  very  nearly  falls  .

but  jacob  surprises  her  ,   shocks  her  enough  to  make  a  sound  like  a  small  scream  when  he  catches  lucy  and  pulls  her  tight  against  his  chest  .   it  is  too  much  to  ask  of  her  to  embrace  him  in  return  .   hot  tears  pour  down  her  cheeks  before  she  can  think  to  convince  herself  otherwise  .
