most controversial statement of all time apparently: trans women and cis women are the same gender
Actually, Shirley Temple was the name of the Actress. You're thinking of Shirley Temple's Drink
Doomed siblings have me on a chokehold in a way no trope can ever achieve. Something so gut wrenchingly beautiful about two kids going through unimaginable trauma and coming out damaged forever. I always eat it up. Maybe they stay together and find solace only in each other, used and kicked out by society! Maybe they end up on opposite sides of the war! Maybe they end up betraying one another! Maybe one of them dies haunting the narrative forever! Maybe one of them destroys the world for the other! So many endless tragic possibilities!

my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government
this is getting really popular so i’d like to add the important caveat that your criticism of a work is no more unassailable than the work itself. just as one is entitled to be critical of something someone else is entitled to disagree with that criticism. i add this because some of you pretend to give a fuck about thoughtful analysis and then when someone points out flaws in your argument you declare that all criticisms are valid. this is untrue. the status of a hater is no more sacred than that of a liker. get off your high horse and engage in the thoughtful discussion you pretend to believe in or perish by my blade

I love asking people how their parents met. You always get an interesting reply. My best friend’s parents met on the relatively new internet in 1999. My other friend’s parents met at Burger King when one was the manager and the other was a regular customer. My parents met at the beach because they were neighbors in their rental houses, mom was on a church trip and dad was getting blackout drunk every night with his friends next door.
Tell me how your parents met in the tags.
The corollary to "you shouldn't call historical people gay because it's a modern term" is "the word friend didn't always mean what you think it means".
So glad you asked, @kittycattscathy! This is the short answer – I'd be happy to elaborate once I have more time, but I think this at least gives some food for thought.
These days, we use "friend" in a very specific way to mean 1) someone who is not a family member 2) who we are close with 3) in a platonic way.
In the 18th century, "friend" is less a specific category of acquaintance (non-familial, platonic) and more a signifier of the depth and closeness of the bond between two people.
Samuel Johnson (1768) gives us this definition:
"Friend" (when used to address someone directly) is a term of endearment and affection; it's a way of indicating that someone is in your inner circle without necessarily meaning "platonic non-family-member". Thus, dismissing any kind of relationship where the two parties use this term by saying "they were just friends" fundamentally misses the point of how the word was being used.
In a way, "friend" is the highest accolade. John and Abigail Adams famously refered to each other as "my friend" in places where a married couple today might say "my dear" or "my darling". The non-exhaustive list of people John Laurens called "friend" includes his father, his uncle, his sister, his favourite tutors, the man he loved and, yes, his friends (in the modern sense).
It's the Royal Academy of Art Young Artist's Summer Show. One of my favourite exhibitions of the year. Like. Not only are the older kids insanely talented, the younger ones' artist statements will just punch you right in the face.

Me, before I saw this: old timey dancing in cartoons has to be over-exaggerated for effect
Me, now: old timey dancing in cartoons had to be toned down to promote a sense of realism because they were too good at it

I hate when you say "actually fish need a lot more care than this" and people go "so what is a low-effort pet then??" like... there isn't one? there isn't a "no research" living animal. you can't take proper care of a living creature without looking into it, full stop, yes even shrimp or chickens or mutt dogs or cats you find in the dumpster
I'm not saying kids can't have pets, but the adults in their lives AND the children themselves have to give enough of a shit to actually give them proper care and attention. there is no such thing as a no-effort animal because they're alive.
