One thing I learned from studying stories is that readers don’t need a character to make the “right” choice. They need the choice to feel inevitable for that person in that moment. The bad decision should have roots. Pride, fear, habit, hunger, shame, love, exhaustion, old training. When the reader thinks “no, don’t do that” and also “oh god, of course you would do that,” the character is working.

There's just something about Taako trying to cheer Lup up one last time, her laughing until she cries and then getting serious again and telling Taako how important he is to her and then disappearing right after. It makes me feel genuinely sick
