Steve Wynn, the founder of Wynn Resorts, Limited, operates luxurious hotel and gaming mega-resorts in Las Vegas and Macau. Numerous insiders in the hospitality and entertainment industries view him as a driving force behind the burst of development in Las Vegas over the last generation. In the 1970s and ‘80s, Steve Wynn parlayed his controlling interest in his Golden Nugget casino and hotel operations in Las Vegas and Atlantic City into profits that enabled him to set the tone for all subsequent development along the Strip. In November 1989, Steve Wynn debuted his new Mirage, a $630 million property that featured an erupting volcano as part of its South Pacific theme. The $12 billion construction boom that followed ensured Las Vegas a place in the top tier of international tourist destinations. Steve Wynn went on to develop the pirate-themed Treasure Island and the elegant European-style Bellagio, which cost more than $1 billion to build. In 1999, Stephen A. Wynn opened Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Mississippi, which led to the rapid development of the Gulf Coast as a major tourist center. Steve Wynn sold his interest in Mirage Resorts, Incorporated, which included all these iconic properties, to MGM Resorts International in 2000. After realizing well over $6 billion for the deal, he invested in the Desert Inn Resort and Casino and rebranded it as Wynn Resorts, again constructing state-of-the-art luxury hotel-casino mega-resorts. In 2010, Stephen Wynn opened Encore at the Wynn Macau, the second of his properties built in Macau under his 20-year concession in China’s gaming hot spot.
