“You mean you didn’t miss me, Stefan? And here I thought we were pals back in the day.”

“I can’t just break up with Matt, Stefan. It’s not that easy.”

As Bonnie Bennett listened to Stefan explain his point, she felt a small sense of relief. Her anger was placated for the moment, and she was able to focus on the better memories she had, on the feelings she normally held for him.“I’m glad to hear that.” she admitted, looking up at the vampire. “We might not be friends right now, but I don’t hate you, Stefan. You need to be careful though, or Damon will take you down with him.”

matt found satisfaction in being the one to tell stefan, after all in his mind stefan stole his girlfriend. he could only hope this would drive a wedge between the two of them, maybe even leading to their breakup. sure matt was with caroline, but even she knew matt was head over heels in love with elena. “yeah, she wanted me to keep a secret. if you need anybody to talk to, you can call me?”

“i didn’t want to be the one to say anything but elena kissed me, and keeping it from you just doesn’t seem like the right thing to do.  i mean, elena and i have history and you and elena have what? a few months together. it’s not a complete suprise she’d try and come back to me. sorry bro. where you and elena go from here isn’t my business.”

katherine’s brows furrow as stefan steps forward, immediately she’s trying to decipher what game he was playing. perhaps the mention of elena brought out the rather bold side of the salvatore. his words did nothing but aggravate her, but she assumed that was his goal and she wasn’t about to let that show, she couldn’t let him win, “i didn’t force either of you to come after me." a smile spreads across her face at his threat, ”try me. i’m much older, faster and smarter than you.“ katherine’s next course of action became blatantly clear, ”i guess i’ll have to show you just how serious i am. we’ll be in touch.“

“we’ve done impossible before.” she nodded, whether she was trying to reassure stefan or herself was up for debate. when he pulled her in she didn’t waste any time returning the hug, holding him tight. “we’ll see where she’s at, if katherine tries something and we’re desperate then we can ask.”

“easier said than done.” she hated to be so cynical but just as things had started to look up everything had turned sour — all her fears coming to life. “but okay, i’ll give it my best shot.” she looked into his eyes. “is it a good idea to ask bonnie ? she’s already been through so much.”

“is that what you’re doing?” katherine inquires as she steps closer to stefan, mirroring his expressionless features, “pining after elena to fill some void? and please, the only thing damon loves is his bourbon and well – me." she knew she had to cut the conversation short, katherine had said what she needed to say and she couldn’t risk foiling any of her plans by oversharing. "not to worry though, there won’t be any pining on either of your parts. because well, if you do, i’ll kill everyone elena loves while she watches and then i’ll kill elena while you watch. are we clear?”

“i didn’t need to be saved.” the goal was to perish in 1864, being presumed dead, or rather entombed klaus would end his search, convinced that the elusive katerinapetrova had finally met her demise; though she wouldn’t be able to see her plan through if she had decided to bring stefan and damon along for the ride. sure she had initial plans to take them far far away from mystic falls, but when the opportunity to vanish presented itself she had to take it. of course, she could’ve brought them with her (if they even wanted to), but with two newbie vampires, one a ripper and the other dangerously impulsive, klaus surely would’ve ended back on her trail & essentially resulting in her death. besides katherine worked best alone. deep down she was well aware of how wrong all of this turned out, but she wasn’t about to admit that or even attempt to face those emotions, or else she’d have to face everything else she’s repressed for the last 500+ years. “like what? damon pining after your girlfriend.”

Bonnie looked at the Salvatore silently, trying to figure out how to proceed.  She didn’t think he was lying, he had no reason to, but knowing he was aware of the danger he put her in didn’t make any of it better. “She should have saved herself.” she sighed, crossing her arms as she looked at the vampire. Her anger faltered as he spoke of her grandmother, and she was reminded that he wasn’t just a reminder of the woman she’d lost. “Thank you for keeping Elena safe. If something had happened to her or Caroline while I was gone… I don’t know what I would have done.” 

katherine wore a sarcastic smile as he stood his ground against her, she was beginning to find this humorous, “you’re so much meaner now — it’s sexy. and of course i missed him, a girl misses her lapdog. not to mention he was much happier to see me, but then again he thought i was your girlfriend so?”  — “gotta say, i was a bit shocked to hear that the school here enrolls 200-year-old students. is my stefan getting all good grades?”

“She may be happier with you, Stefan, but she’s safer without you.” Bonnie felt the need to point out, though she appreciated how much he cared about her best friend. It’d be a lie to say that things hadn’t looked up for just a moment whenever Stefan Salvatore had rolled into town, Elena seemed truly happy for the first time since she lost her parents, and the way she felt about the vampire was more than evident. He was good for her, and maybe she was good for him, but with everything else going on, and how complicated it had all become, she couldn’t deny the obvious, or at least, what she thought was obvious. She didn’t react to the second comment he offered, though she did hear it loud and clear. His last comment though, that one she couldn’t ignore. “I’m sorry doesn’t change anything.” she bluntly replied, though she relented only a moment later and offered “Thanks. I’m sorry too.”
