Hispanic Heritage Reads:
Esmeralda Santiago, a generational classic.
When I Was Puerto Rican isn’t just a tale for youth, it’s a tale for everyone. Santiago is definitely top ten most descriptive authors I’ve encountered. She has a way of painting such a picture that there isn’t room for imagination. She paints the smell, the feel of every scene you read. She makes you proud to be where she’s from and place your entire life into perspective. As a gringa, I found myself relating to many jibara ways. Santiago found ways to make me, a second generation Puerto Rican feel as if I came from the island. I was especially here for the history lessons Santiago slithered into the text. I found myself pausing the read to look into facts. Only to discover that, that there were actual facts throughout the read.
I thank Santiago for this read and the opportunity to get closer to my roots. Not only was this an outstanding story, this is a read that can be re-read a myriad of times. May we continue to keep Santiago finds in the reading rotation of our children and our children’s children.
Hispanic Heritage Reads:
Every year for Hispanic Heritage month I read only Latinx reads by latinx authors. What better way to start off my month than with the phenomenal Elizabeth Acevedo and her debut novel The Poet X.
I’d been hearing many rave over Acevedo for a while now and I am here to inform you that she's worth ALL the hype and then some. As a poet I still find myself in awe of this collection. I admire the depths of literary analogies and visuals Acevedo was able to convey. Never have I read a work that works well both separately and as an entire collection. This was such an easy read to follow while also extremely thought provoking. I enjoyed every second of the flashbacks and smiles along the way, and yes, yes I cried. Although I am of Puerto Rican and Colombian heritage, Acevedo’s Dominican culture hit all too hard close to home. There isn't much more I can say without giving away the read so moral of the story, go out right now to buy/read this amazing work of art.
