“January 7, 2005 the birth of my blood came fully to life.” So true. I didn’t know that gear of love until I met Sophia. And within moments of meeting her, she knew everything. The whole history of the universe was there in her magnificent brown eyes. These days she stars in my music video, joins the band on the road, is the absolute best to talk philosophy with, and we go on college tours together where I try to seem less nervous than I am about the prospect of not getting to see her every day. From one month old to 18 went by in a blinding flash, and now she is a young adult. But the soul remains what it was the day we met: wise, determined, compassionate and adventurous. 10 years ago today, I headlined Webster Hall in NYC with my band, the Sixers. It was an “evening with” and we played to 1200 people for 3 hours. It was an emotional one (aren’t they all) because we had decided to take a hiatus. In the way that, as we get older, one doesn’t always know when, or if, they will see a friend again, we hugged, said goodbye and headed off into the night. It’s fitting that this anniversary falls where it does. “Thanksgiving” was the first single I released after the band parted ways. A co-write with Kit Karlson & Chip Johnson, it is the song for which I am most grateful. Since 2012, Sam Getz has toured the world with Welshly Arms and enjoyed a platinum album with “Legendary.” He has two wonderful kids and still rips the guitar like his fingers are on fire. Most recently he (along with Jimmy Weaver) produced half of my new record “Keep It Up, Kid.” The other half of KIUK was produced by Dave “Cookie Dough” Chalfant. Cook wasn’t on stage with us that last night in New York but he was a part of everything we ever did and is a Sixer to the last. I am infinitely better for his presence in my life. Kit and Chip have remained partners in song, and in addtion to co-producing “Blunderstone Rookery” & the “East” portion of “South, West, North, East” they have enjoyed great success with their producing & publishing partnership. This fall they toured in our friend Tyrone Wells’ line-up. Two of the greatest talents I’ve ever known. Boots Factor many of you have seen on stage with me in recent years. You know him for his singing, sense of humor and stunning musicality. You may or may not know, he has released 3 albums and is perhaps the best dad ever. Boots is all over KIUK, and I can’t wait to rock the Bowery Ballroom plus with him next week. As for me; 5 albums, a book, more than 900 shows including my first stops in Europe and Australia, and a TEDx Talk that opened the door to my work as a speaker and storyteller. I’ve played with several of my heroes, not the least of whom are my daughters. I guess you could say we have kept busy. Yesterday, me and the girls drove to see my brother and his family. New England during peak fall foliage is as beautiful as anything in the entire world. We had a pumpkin exchange program where we took home his awesomely nuanced “cat pumpkin” and he kept my “could-have-been-carved-by-a-child-classic-jackolantern.” We goofed around and laughed with our littlest sister @kelloggsforbrkfst who always brings out the best in everyone. On the drive home the sound of my kids’ exuberance filled the car. The point is: we all have to remember to put down the phone sometimes. I HAVE NO PICTURES OF WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT, but I will say this … adventure starts with “yes.” Somehow a week of tour has already passed. In addition to the shows with Counting Crows, I took a bite out of the novel I’m co-authoring with Alison Hammer, was part of a wonderful co-write for a cool young artist named Leon of Athens, and started filming a new mini-movie for the next single off “Keep It Up, Kid.” All cool stuff. Also, all the reason that by the end of my first day in LA, I had been awake for 24 hours straight (no stars, do not recommend.) And so, for the first time since leaving home I let myself sleep and in all my middle-aged glory netted an epic 8 hours. Woo-hoo! Then we filmed. Then we ate. Then it was evening and supposedly time to rest, when what to my wondering eye should appear but @thecomedystore so close and so near. Now I am of the opinion that comedians are the last truth tellers in an endless line of fakery, so I suggested to my tour manager Shady that we see if we could get in. It was sold out, but we waited around and eventually were granted passage into one of the most unforgettable nights of my life. Sitting 5 feet off stage right, we watched 3 straight hours of @sebastiancomedy @aliwong @bertkreischer @whitneycummings @bobbyleelive @marcmaron @nealbrennan @ianedwardscomic just KILLING. It was a gift from the Gods. A flash of inspiration that reminded me of my first rock concert. The thing is, I had a totally different summer planned for myself, but … YES to tour with @countingcrows. YES to book with @thishammer. YES to video with @thatpeterharding. YES to co-write with @leonofathens. YES to @thecomedystore. ..: and all that “Yes” has led to one hell of an adventure. And to be clear, every single “yes” scared me. But I said it anyway and now I have these memories. 4 more weeks of shows. Today felt different for a lot of reasons, but when I gathered my family for corn hole, burgers and fireworks it was a almost normal. Scenes from Easter 2022. Found this note on my way out the door. I appreciate that my daughter was advocating for the whole family, despite her acknowledged self interest. (2) I also appreciate that Holly has jumped in on the pagan aspects of Easter. If it’s going to be a bunny, why not a #CasualCat? (3) And while I know that piling in 6 to a room, driving 870 miles, sitting in 4 hours of bumper to bumper traffic from DC to Richmond, and spending more than that trying to find bathrooms and parking spaces isn’t fun “on paper,” I love being around these people. There is a great saying that “you are only as happy as your least happy child.” For better or worse, my wife and I seem to feel, in real time, every emotion that each of our four kids is dealing with. It’s a hallmark of our generation. And when you add your own human experience to the equation, it’s easy to feel like a turtle without a shell. But on a night when you get to watch your daughter shine on stage, the way Adeline did last night, and when every one of her sisters is there rooting her on, you feel grateful to be so wide open.
