Maximus's most unexpected superpower is just being able to match his opponent's energy under any circumstances. Some guy wants to have a knife fight, so he has a knife fight. Xander teaches him Hammer Smash, he hammer smashes Xander's head. And then he makes the absolutely tremendous choice of fighting a Deathclaw in the style of a Deathclaw duel. Whatever the hell you're doing, Maximus can do it too, and probably better than you - and if that somehow fails, he's got 3-5 other fighting styles under his belt to throw out in a pinch.
