"In fact, in a recent analysis of cases in New York City of murder trials, the median New York City murder trial takes from indictment to the start of trial 23 months. Mr. Mangione's trial will occur at the 20 month mark. This means generally he is proceeding three months faster as compared to other murder cases in this jurisdiction and those are cases where they're only fighting one case and they do not have the complexities of this case."

Mangione is being short-changed by three months, think about how much of a difference that much extra time would have if you only had one case on your plate.

Mangione needs to prepare for three cases, a battle between three competing jurisdictions (Pennsylvania, New York, U.S. Federal), to see which judge or prosecutor will overtake the other in a rush for first place to stake their claim on this man’s life like he’s some kind of hunting prize.

The median time to prepare for a NY state trial is 714 days (23.5 months) compared to Mangione who has 624 days (20.5 months) based on the state trial date of September 8, 2026.

Does the right to a speedy trial mean a fast-tracked trial? Fighting three cases concurrently is unprecedented, is Mangione and his team prepared to juggle overlapping cases?

We analyzed NYC murder statistics (2024), here is what we found:

8 (15.4%) cases have a trial date scheduled, 32 (61.5%) are yet to be scheduled, 6 (11.5%) have no trial information available, and 6 (11.5%) did not go to trial due to pleading guilty or for other reasons.

Is Mangione’s case being unfairly rushed to the top of the pile, while other cases are not yet scheduled, in a race to beat the federal trial to the finish line?

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) reported 382 homicides in New York City (2024). 252 (66.0%) incidents led to an arrest, 89 (23.3%) cases remain unsolved, and 8 (2.1%) were dead before police arrived on the scene.

32 (8.6%) of these cases still have outstanding arrests almost two years later, while Mangione was arrested after five days of investigation.

In New York City in 2024 there were 382 homicides which led to the arrest of 238 individuals leaving 23.3% of homicide cases unsolved.

Luigi Mangione, allegedly involved in the shooting of millionaire healthcare executive Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024, was arrested five days later on December 9, 2024.

61.5% of NYC murder cases in 2024, in this sample, are yet to be scheduled for trial. This means that cases from earlier in the year are still awaiting confirmation of a trial date, yet Mangione’s case, for a December incident, is being propelled forward.
