Dissecting Star Wars (Clone Wars)

Star Wars has been a world renowned phenomena since the release of the first movies by George Lucas, the inspiration for such films partly came from our world's own history and problems of the time when they were first made. Naturally with such a world wide phenomena it became the subject of the academic community in order to study the films and dissect them and find perhaps intentional or unintentional lines of comparison between star wars and our history. According to Michael B Charles “Admission to the Galactic Senate depended on financial status. In Attack of the Clones, substantial amounts of money are needed. Obi-Wan asserts that "Senators focus only on those who fund their campaigns….. A Roman senator in the Republic also had to be elected by the people, something that could be facilitated by bribery. As in the Star Wars galaxy, the Roman Senate was comprised of members of the landed aristocracy.” Charles draws the comparison between the Galactic Republic's senate and the Roman Republic senate as both had one major problem that made the eerily similar in that both senates had a massive problem of according to Charles  “The Republican Roman senate did represent freedom, but mainly for the elite, and it was from this group that those who directly administered Rome and its provinces were drawn”. The exact same is true for the Galactic republic in Star Wars in which in order to become a senator you must be the leader of a planet and that planet must be “sufficiently developed” or in layman's terms you had to be wealthy enough to bribe your way into getting a senatorial seat. This is interesting as George Lucas Stated that the inspiration for the corrupt senate in Star Wars came from the Nixon administration and the Vietnam war. This suggests that the comparison between the Roman Republic/Empire and the Galactic Republic and soon to be Galactic Empire was unintentional. Which is surprising as there are more lines of comparison between Rome and Star Wars rather than the Nixon administration and Star Wars. This could be as the followed similar paths in which the Roman Republic became the Roman Empire after the first roman emperor Augustus ascended to the pinnacle in which Star Wars follows almost the exact same path a senator becomes the leader of the republic and then becomes the emperor of an emperor he created from his seat of power in republic by the means of a massive war.

Star Wars the Clone Wars has a bit of a problem when it comes to scaling as can be clearly seen in the tv show especially during space battles in which the Jedi have three ships against the Separatists which often have two to three times as many. The biggest example of this issue I can think of is season two episode 16 in which one of the main characters Anakin Skywalker has three Venator Class capital ships against one of the bigger antagonists, Admiral Trench who has nearly 5 times as many ships with at least five of them being of the capital ships variety the majority of which were Lucrehulks which on their own pose a significant threat to a venators and have a decent chance of beating a Venator the republic’s/jedi’s mainline capital ship. This entire space battle makes no sense if you think about it somewhat logically as the republic is sending three capital ships with reinforcements of a single capital ship on the way and a stealth ship to carry relief supplies to the planet below which is inadvertently used to kill the enemy admiral i.e. Admiral Trench. Despite that Anakin doesn't wait for the reinforcements and devices to go against a fleet that is commanded by one of the separatists greats admirals who has more capital ships than he does and on top of that trench has several ships of the cruiser and frigate variety that seem to number around 10 or 12. To sum this up Anakin decides to attack a fleet that we will number conservatively to be five capital ships and 10 cruisers which number a total of 15 conservatively. Which means the Republic decides it's a good idea to send three capital ships that are commanded by their most  general and a highly skilled and reputable admiral Yularen against a fleet that is commanded by their enemies greatest admiral with a fleet that is conservatively five times their size and against them to win?

The book Star wars the Clone wars vol 1 “The Defense of Kamino” was published on July 9th 2003 by Dark Horse comics and was written by John Ostrander, Haden Blackman, and Scott Allie. The novel was made in conjunction with the Star Wars the clone wars 2003 micro series, the novel was made to further add to the clone wars story that was being created for the first time in order to serve as a bridge between the second and third movies. Unfortunately since the book is considered part of the micro series it is not considered canon in the star wars universe as well as the rest of the micro series. However it is considered to be part of the legends version of star wars canon and is still referenced by the star wars community in discussion of the legends version of star wars lore. The novel is well known for its introduction of the famous Alpha and Null class ARC Troopers which were some of the original clones created as prototypes before the commonly and widely created normal clone trooper. Without going into spoiler territory the novel does a fantastic job presenting these elite arc troopers for the first time and does an excellent job portraying them as top of the line super soldiers who in all likelihood could change the course of the war on their own. Furthermore the drawings in this book do an excellent job of painting the arc troopers in an even greater light to demonstrate their superiority to normal clones as the novel draws normal clones to be somewhat muscular but not enough that it would affect their armor. The novel draws the arcs in a way to show they are physically stronger by giving them armor with outlines of their enormous muscles to give a look of super strength that would rival the strongest men on earth today. This novel was so well written and was so impactful that it was adapted by Dave Filoni into the Star Wars the Clone Wars Series and became one of the most prominent and highest rated episodes of the entire series. In my opinion I wish this book were considered cannon as it is incredibly well written and adds some of my favorite characters to the series being the impregnable and elite arc troopers. However that will sadly never happen.

The article written by Rafael Motoamayer published on 4/25/25  by Indie wire titled “Genndy Tartakovsky’s ‘Clone Wars’ Is Still the Best ‘Star Wars’ Movie Tie-In” is an article about the Star wars the clone wars micro series that was released in 2003. The article was written as an opinion article in honor of the 20th anniversary of the release of Revenge of the sith. The article goes on to explain the purpose behind the making of the series and how it was meant to fill in the gap that was not able to be covered in the movies. Furthermore it gives a “looking back” on the series as it the 2003 micro series is what paved the way for the now well known and accredited star wars the clone wars TV series which is beloved by many.

For my Primary Source Post I chose to rewatch Star Wars the Clone Wars as this TV series is what my blog is primarily about and the series is where my obsession and love for star wars first began. As such I thought it was fitting for my first primary source to be where my Star Wars journey began. When I was re-watching the series I noticed many more things that I don't remember noticing when I watched the series as a child. One of things I noticed was how the cruelties of the war were significantly more prevalent than I first thought. Which surprised me as the series was initially intended to be a kids show. To be specific whenever the Jedi went somewhere to fight Separatists the atrocities that they were inflicted were cleverly and simply disguised as can be seen in various episodes such as the invasion of Chirstosphis or the battle of Ryloth in which it is heavily implied that in both invasions the separatists goal was to kill and enslave the entire population. Compared to as a kid I thought that they were simply attempting to kill the Jedi and clones and not the planet's people as it was cleverly and simply hidden from my child's eyes and mind as I wasn't able to put it together of what was actually happening unless it was explicitly stated or shown. As such I now have a much bigger appreciation for the series which is surprising as I did not think that it could not get any bigger however with these new realizations a part of the nostalgia I held for the series is gone because of how I now see the series in a new light despite that the series still holds a special place in my childhood and will forever remain so.

Dave Filoni is well known for his exceptional cowboy hat and being one of the original directors and writers that worked on Star Wars the Clone Wars with George Lucas back in 2008. Dave worked together with Geroge on the Clone wars series until its cancellation in 2013 and its supposed 6th and final season.

 However, after hearing the outcries of the series’s fans over many years after its cancellation. Dave Filoni convinced Disney who had purchased the series along with Lucas-arts to bring it back for a final season to wrap up the show in a neatly tied bow. In 2020 with the now famous phrase #clone-wars-saved Star Wars The Clone Wars received its 7th and final season and an ending that many of the fans believe could not have been done better

Star Wars was created by Gerorge Lucas to pay homage to many space faring series that he enjoyed as a child and According to (Geroge Lucas Biography, https://shorturl.at/uKsLE ) the creation of Star Wars was a made on a huge gamble for Fox Studios who currently was quickly coming upon financial ruin and if Star Wars performed poorly it would be the end of them. Thankfully their gamble paid off and the Star Wars movies very quickly became the talk of the world as everyone was kidnapped by the enjoyment and thrill that the movies brought as nothing had done what Star Wars had accomplished

George Lucas with Dave Fioloni Created the now hit series Star Wars the Clone Wars that was released in 2008. The Clone Wars animated series was created to further explore and explain what occurred after Star Wars Attack of the Clones and before Star Wars Revenge of the Sith. The Series was also created as a show suitable for younger audiences with stories being made more simply and geared towards children to make Star Wars more available to a broader audience as the stories of the movies were believed to be too complex even for some adults. As such The Clone wars series was created with that in mind, but despite it being created for younger audiences the TV show was a huge hit among all ages
