Amelia wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty, to do what it took to win ⸻ but, of course, as monstrous as she claimed to be, she could never abide what she deemed unacceptable. He was working as quickly as he can to save the fading life on the ground, who was struggling to cling to this plane of existence.
She can't help but think it is a waste; but it's not her call to make, and while she may disagree, she wouldn't allow anything to halt his attempts to save a life. Amelia has taken so many, this might even the score a little.
Her body goes flying as she launches herself, the only thing quick enough to reach the assailant before he reaches the doctor. Evening the score doesn't do much, when she's just taken another life.
But she saved two, it has to count.
Her breath is heavy, confirming death before she grins to the doctor.
❝ He certainly didn't, ❞ she answers with a grin, gesturing to the corpse below her. She crawls over to McCoy then, there isn't much time. There's apprehension across her face. ❝ Can I help, doctor? ❞
PRESCIOUS SECONDS TICK BY, the doctor taken from his medical haze. Blue eyes linger on Amelia, assessing her for any physical damage. He doesn't see any. Doesn't mean it isn't there.
"Was he trying to attack me?" He asks with a raised brow.
A soft groan under his palm draws McCoy's attention. He releases a quiet curse before grabbing his regenerator and attempting to close the wound. But no matter how high the setting, the alien continues to ooze black goo. It only furthers the amount of curses from Leo's lips.
"I don't know," he says under his breath. Then he cuts his gaze to Amelia. "Needle and thread. Old fashioned way. It's in that pack. Grab it for me."
[ INTERCEPT ]: the sender unexpectedly emerges and stands between the receiver and a threat
"I KNEW I SHOULD HAVE stayed in bed," McCoy grumbles as he slips and slides down the side of a grassy hill. He also should look into working on his cardio. Most of his focus had been on weight building and strength training to combat the nature of space.
A hand reaches out, slowing his decent. Just a few more yards and then all he has to do is push a button. How hard can that be? Push a button and then his friends will be free. At least, that's what the alien had said. Now that McCoy thinks about it, he isn't sure if he was told the truth.
When feet hit flat ground, Leo stumbles. Feet sink into a pool of small pebbles. "This has the be a joke, right?" He says aloud to no one. Picking up his feet he waddles to the small, stone kiosk that pulsates with a purple light. That's it.
Just a bit further. Just a bit further. Leo's eyes zero is on the kiosk. He misses the movement to his side and the sudden appearance of one, no two figures. Arms pinwheel as he avoids a blow, only to have Jim save him like same damsel in distress. "What the hell?" Jim is supposed to be trapped like the rest of the Enterprise crew.
"Why the fuck do you have a sword, Jim?" This day just keeps getting weirder and weirder. Especially when the Captain starts engaging in some medieval battle with a creature McCoy has never seen the likes of before.
[ OUT COLD ]: the sender knocks out an assailant before they can seriously wound the receiver.
HE'S WORKING AS FAST AS HE CAN. Field medicine hasn't grown prettier over the years. In fact, it's grown uglier, the color of blood multiplying from red to a multitude of color. Presently, Leo is elbow deep in black blood. And no, it isn't natural.
Fingers grow slick, dampening his gauze and regenerator even before he can stitch the wound. If he doesn't act fast, the alien under his care is going to die.
Just as he reaches for a piece of equipment, a sudden gust of air ripples past, followed by the thud of a body. McCoy whips around, eyes wide as he stares at Amelia, her face morphed into a serious expression.
"What the hell?" he cries. Eyes drop to the motionless form. "Did you do that?"
The Captain flinches, but if it’s due to the way his name is whispered in the space between them, or the crackling of McCoy’s bones, is left to be seen. But his hand tightens ever so slightly on the grip of his phaser, white knuckling.
Jim doesn’t need a read to know his blood pressure is through the roof. Feels it as a pounding in his temple as the vein pops slightly in his agitation.
“I got about 430 reasons as to why even if I do consider admitting that, we can’t turn back.” He leans back on his heels, catching the doctor’s eye. “Actually, I can’t, but you can. You should.”
AN ANNOYED HUFF RUFFLES his hair as wisps hang limply in his eyes. Leo runs a hand, pushing the strands back. It lasts for several seconds before they droop again. "I'm like a dog Jim. Loyal, even until death. I'm not leaving your sorry ass. But I do think we should regroup before we go in, guns blazing." Blue eyes plead with his captain and his friend. "Please?"

ON VULCAN, AT ELEVEN YEARS old, Spock often recalls his confrontation at the learning center as if it were unbent by time. Stiff-lipped and defiant, they said to him: look, he has human eyes, only to contradict that statement with greater clarity—
—neither Vulcan nor Human, you have no place in the universe.
It mattered little on the surface.
But inside him, deep within the threadbare place of two worlds, the pocket of his mother’s heritage knew rage, sadness, told too often that he was unfit for the desert he was born in, pushing and forcing him away.
“ Should I behave differently at my own expense, Doctor? ” Admittedly, he had conjured hope in other places. That Earth would be different in an apparent instinct of rebellion. It was a childish assumption, he knows, lengthened by anger and loneliness. By leaving Vulcan behind, he could not abandon disappointment.
That is evident to him, now.
“ It is never my intent to implicate inferiority of any person aboard this ship, regardless of how it may appear. ” Of which means nothing given its results.
Spock’s brows knit, thinking. McCoy’s criticism is not entirely in vain. He understands that his manner of offering advice — while quite logical and suitable for a Vulcan — may not be the most effective method when dealing with humans. As he had alluded to in so few words, Spock has long since been aware of his differences.
Even here.
“ There are many of whom have earned their position aboard this ship. However, their mistakes, should they be inevitable, must be worthy of their intelligence. Would it pacify the crew that I exist to coddle them instead? ”
@starmed1c
THERE IS THAT UNBRIDALED rage lurking under the surface. A feeling he hasn't felt since Nero or Khan. McCoy works to control that fury as it races under his skin and pounds his heart in a war beat rhythm.
"Intentions be damned, Spock. I'm talking about how you present yourself. No, I'm not telling you to change, I'm telling you to bend." Which at this rate, the doctor might as well be talking to a brick wall. He inhales a deep breath as if that will give him clarity.
Pointing a finger at Spock's chest, Leo continues. "You are obtuse and infuriating. Sometimes I wonder if you act extra Vulcan just to prove the stereotypes of humanity and alien cultures. To justify your views of the world. Humans have a huge capacity to accept and assimilate. But if you, Commander Spock, don't make an effort to meet the crew halfway, you will have a mutiny on your hands. A disregard for orders and respect. You will lose your place as Commander. And I don't think that's something you want."
@prcspcr continued from here.
HE READS TOO DEEPLY into Spock's reply. Though McCoy shouldn't be surprised. He thought very little of the Vulcan too upon their first meeting. And he had made it known. But there is a wasp's sting at having his suspicions confirmed; Spock had thought very little of him at one point. Question was, had it been professional or personally? Personally he could handle. Professional, not so much.
Cheeks start to flame and he cuts his gaze away. "Shouldn't have asked questions I have no business knowing the answers to," he muttered. "Forget I said anything."
THE UNIVERSE ITSELF IS A MIRROR, REFLECTIONS of light, and full of curiosities to be picked and pried and pulled apart. Spock had often looked to it as a child, staring up and up and up, wondering against numerous equations and numbers what he might find among its merciless existence.
He has discovered one of them, now, he thinks, wrapped in steel; it even talks like him, Doctor McCoy. Loud and boisterous and — quite boldly — comparing him to another Spock, a mere shadow of something greater—
“ I have done no such thing, Doctor. ” Spock retorts. The conveyance is bland, boredom taking shape in the emptiness in his mouth. But he takes the opportunity to move closer, nonetheless, to inspect this creature of whom — and by all contrast to the McCoy he knows well — still retains both of his eyes.
“ Captain Kirk, as you may be aware, is not fond of being robbed of credit when he is entirely at fault. ” That wisdom is important. Though, for what purpose Kirk has done this — or anything Kirk does — is unclear. Spock can make a dozen estimations and none of them bode well for their guest. He tilts his head.
“ However. I understand you were wandering in places that you do not belong. And that you do not belong here. ”
@starmed1c
THE FAMILIARITY IN WHICH THIS Vulcan speaks dials up his trembling a notch. That means there must be a version of himself running around. Swallowing, McCoy recalls another lesson from the ranch: don't show fear. Leo is looking at a wild beast he could crush him flat in less than a second. He'll need to play his cards right.
"Well excuse me for wandering around this death trap looking for a way out." He shifts, trying to loosen his bindings. "When a transporter suddenly beams you to a warped version of the Enterprise, one tends to wander." His eyes narrow, pulling on his false bravado. "If our situations were reversed, I'm sure you would do the same."
With a quick inhale, McCoy gives a subtle tug of his wrists, trying to shrink the diameter as much as he can so he can free himself. But that would go against all logic and science that he knows of. He's very screwed. Where is Jim and his cacamamie plans when you need them?
the cutting remark is sharp as obsidian , matching the way spocks eyes became like steel , WATCHING the other in front of him , before then tilting his head back , satisfied that he was being understood fully in this conversation . prejudice , as much as starfleet tried to rebel against such an ancient form of thinking , still bubbled through on occasion . not that the vulcan cared for it . on the enterprise alone , he had been called many things -- hobgoblin being a favorite amongst those that he annoyed for whatever reason .
turning his head slightly , he lifted a brow . ❝ years of practise , doctor , ❞ he said almost idly . ❝ perhaps you should . i know that jim would very much ENJOY it . ❞
AND JUST LIKE THAT, his mood sours. Expression morphs into a scowl as McCoy grumbles something under his breath. "You, I could deal with you. Jim, he's a handful and maybe I could deal with him. But the both of you together, that spells trouble for me." McCoy is studiously avoiding the fact that if he were to attend more away missions with Jim leading the charge, he'd suffer from hourly heart attacks due to Jim's ability to find all manner of trouble in the universe. Though, he supposed if Spock was there, the Vulcan could balance them all out. Maybe. There was no telling.
"Maybe I'll give it some thought."
leaning against the doorframe , watching the chief medical officer work , spock kept silent . arms folded across his chest && a frankly unreadable expression painted across his features , the vulcan knew that he would not succeed in the medical field . he knew the basics of first aid , && CERTAINLY was accomplished enough to understand most species' biology && the way it interacted with the environment around it , but spock would readily admit that he lacked the bedside manner , the patience && ultimately , the stomach for it .
when he finally spoke , having considered that leonard may have already sensed his presence , it was to ALERT the other man that he was there . given the go-ahead to come further into his office , spock unfolded his arms && moved in , eyes scanning the papers strewn over the desk , with complex formulas && molecular structures . picking one up , spock was able to gain a rough idea before doctor mccoy informed him of such .
❝ fascinating , ❞ the vulcan mused . asked then what had brought him by , spock then lifted his head . ❝ i apologize , leonard , i do not mean to interrupt your work , this is truly interesting && could definitely PROVIDE answers to some of the other questions i had about that planet . ❞
a pregnant pause before then spock shook the thought from his head . ❝ i was hoping to schedule my physical , i believe i have let it slip a little longer than i should have . ❞
HE SHIFTS IN HIS SEAT, fingers twitching against the arm rest. Leo watches with rapt attention as Spock pours over his research. The doctor isn't jealous per say, but he cannot escape the erroneous feeling that the Commander may judge him in some form or fashion for his brand of science. Though Spock has never exhibited any indicators to prove his hypnosis true.
"Thanks," he says, gruffly. But all of that is tossed to the wayside as Dr. McCoy straightens in his chair. Spock is one of the few who is actually punctual about his physicals. "Did you hit your head?" McCoy muses. "You're normally on top with these types of things." His lips twitch, trying to combat a smile.
Reaching for another PADD from a desk drawer, McCoy pulls up a calendar. "I'm pretty much free all week. Pick a day and time and I'll pencil you in."

" you can come out now. they're long gone. "
" nobody's going to hurt you like that again. "
FINGERS RAN ALONG THE EDGE, paper no longer sharp but dulled with age. Besides, McCoy had enough callous on his pads to hold back the bite of a paper cut. The photo, one of his daughter when she was a child, rested gently in his hands, eyes tracing every angle and line of her beautiful face.
Lips tugged up, a half grin, remembering a time when life was simpler and he was happy. Content. Running to space, while exciting, new and dangerous, could not replace the longing in his chest for hot summer days, lemonade, and tire swings.
Footsteps pulled Leo from his musings, hand shoving the picture out of sight as a finger swiped under his eye. His mask slipped into place as he waited for his gust to step into his office.
Open Starter
"JIM," CAME THE HARSH whisper, McCoy's bones groaning in protest as he crouched slightly, keeping close to the Captain's side. "Admit it. You're in over your head on this one." Something McCoy hated to say but he didn't see a way out of this. Even for Jim and his hair-brained schemes. "We still have time to go back and rethink this." @endeavvor
Tiny starter call here, too?
@prcspcr : " i understand more than you think . "
WEIGHT SHIFTS, A SUBTLE smile curling at McCoy's lips. He watches the stunned expression of the alien standing across from him and Spock. It seems that even the legend of Vulcan's has reached far and wide in the galaxy. And McCoy isn't the only one to fall into the trap of prejudice. Teeth sink into his lower lip, struggling to bite back his laughter.
After a few tense moments of silence, a feeling of awkward heat rushing across McCoy's skin, it cracks, filled with a sputtering apology. "You're not half bad in the field, Mister Spock," Doctor McCoy teases. "Maybe I should come on away missions more often."

@prcspcr : " what are you working on ? "
THERE IS SOLITUDE AND SAFETY to be found in the ambient glow of the medbay, filled with chirps and beeps from medical equipment. Coupled with the low murmur of the nurses and patients, McCoy can forget that he's sailing through space or that he might die at any second.
Focus is absorbed by his work, a line of data padds scattered across his desk. Seriously, there must be a program that could sift through this data for him. While he doesn't trust machines, he does trust a computer program, on occasion. It would make his life easier.
Head creaks up, eyes narrowing then returning to their normal state. "Commander Spock, come in." McCoy has no idea how long the Vulcan has been standing there. But since the doctor is in his element and feels safe in the confines of his office, he produces two glasses and pours them both a drink.
"Comparing data from a gene experiment I've been running. One of the M class planets the Enterprise visited a while back had an interesting mutation in their population. I'm studying it to see if has any application to humans on earth." And to see if this mutation is dangerous for the population. There'd been rumors of sudden and unexplained deaths. While their stop had been brief, McCoy thought it might have something to do with their DNA.
Sitting back in his seat, sipping his drink, Leo runs a critical eye up and down the Commander. "What brings you by?"
@fasciinating : " you mean to escape , do you not ? "
ONE OF THE FIRST LESSONS taught on a ranch, especially when working with large livestock, is how to escape, unscathed. Or, with as little damage as possible.
As hate filled eyes look up at the Vulcan wearing Spock's face, McCoy's intent is clear. Even to this version of the hobgoblin. He'd have to talk with Mister Sulu about not telegraphing his movements. That is, if he can get back home.
"Ten points to the astute evil twin," he drawls, brow furrowed as he works his wrists against the bindings. Short of dislocating his thumb or finding a bone saw, McCoy is trapped. He'll just have to pull on all his wits and cunning to get himself out of this.
Puffing up his chest, putting as much bravado as he can into his trembling frame, he stares the evil looking Vulcan down. "Now are you going to tell me why you've bound me? Or why you look like Commander Spock but more...evil." Lord help him. One Spock is enough. Two, running around the universe, has him quivering in his boots. Three, well curse him to hell. McCoy is never going to survive this life.
