happy 4th of july to this image the official boston fire department made and posted to twitter like 3 years ago. i will not let it die.
small tips for Enjoying Being Alive from someone who went from wanting to die to genuinely loving life. these won't fix your life but they'll make it a lot easier to want to live day by day. I promise.
tell yourself things you do not believe. it feels stupid at first but I've done this for years and now I believe it when I say "I'm good at this" or "I love myself" or "I deserve good shit!"
make a note of every mundane good thing that happens to you. mental or literal notes! could be as little as "the sky is a nice shade of grey, it's calming" or "I ate a piece of fruit today, I'm looking after myself" or "I talked to a friend". again, feels stupid at first, but I genuinely believe this is part of why I have so many "good days". trick your brain into storing things in your long-term memory that you wouldn't otherwise remember.
diet deficiencies can make you properly miserable. your physical health impacts your mental health more than you'd think. get some vitamins, some omega-3s and so on. whether from food or supplements. they can make quite a difference! your brain is responsible for a LOT of the way you feel, and giving it the fatty acids it needs to function at its best can go a long way.
I know these all sound like stupid junk people who have never wanted to die tell you. I know they sound like dumb "self-help" tips written by people who have suffered mild anxiety at worst.
they're coming from someone who had multiple daily panic attacks for half a decade. someone who genuinely felt like he did not deserve to live. someone who hated himself so much he convinced himself he was irredeemably evil. someone who loves being alive these days, even though it's difficult sometimes.
you truly don't have to follow any of this advice. but just read through. store it in the back of your mind. come back to it when you want. best of luck. [:
These are genuinely great! If I can add a small comment it would be to try to change scenery every now and then, take a different route home and go for walks. And make appointments to meet your friends!
ABSOLUTELY. anytime I feel myself descending into a slump where everything feels wrong and bad and gross and hard, I go on a Weird Walk. I choose a familiar destination (the dairy, the beach, a specific hill) and intentionally choose a route I've never tried before. it's crazy but it makes me feel better almost instantly, even if the new walk is worse than my usual route. your brain CRAVES new stimulation! you are a member of a species with one of the most active brains in the animal kingdom. please try not to live like a hamster.

post the first lines of your last ten fics! Thanks for tagging me, @ussjellyfish!
1. Turning Circles ~ Hetty Woodstone/Trevor Lefkowitz, CBS Ghosts
The first time he kisses her she's caught completely off guard, yet it feels so right in that moment.
2. The sycamore tree ~ Hetty/Trevor (can be read as a platonic standalone but was meant as an extra scene in The fall), CBS Ghosts
Hours after Liz and Kenny's pre-wedding fiasco, Hetty slips out into the blue dusk, skirt hems drifting across the silver-rimed grass.
3. The fall ~ Hetty/Trevor, CBS Ghosts
The first thing Hetty notices about the new ghost is his lack of…pants.
4. The Roadhouse ~ Harry Truman/Dale Cooper, Twin Peaks
They eat burgers and cherry pie, chat amicably with Norma who has a sly twist of her mouth, gently kicking them out twenty minutes past closing time.
5. Only if for a night ~ Zelda Spellman/Lilith (written as a spinoff from my friend's story), Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Zelda first notices the flowers three nights before Halloween, as the moon rises orange and full in the darkening sky.
6. The Lonely ~ Harry/Dale, Twin Peaks
Late March in the Pacific Northwest is generally warm and rainy - except this morning, a cool, clean light brightens the land.
7. I hold you tight like rain ~ John Sheppard/Elizabeth Weir, Stargate Atlantis
Less than forty-eight hours after the storm recedes, Elizabeth realizes she's still exhausted - even more so than she was that fateful night.
8. Silver Screen ~ John/Elizabeth, Stargate Atlantis
This is a bad idea, John thought seconds before the condo door swung open, and he was left fumbling excuses for appearing on her doorstep.
9. Glory Days ~ John/Elizabeth, Stargate Atlantis
Twenty years after first landing in Atlantis, John Sheppard kicks back in a beach chair, watching the Pacific.
10. The Lone Star ~ Margaret Houlihan + Sherman Potter, M*A*S*H
It’s always silent, afterwards.

This was fun and strangely nostalgic (I haven't looked at most of these in at least a year!) Tagging: @seariderfalcon @peridotbelle @glowelle + anyone reading this 🙂

It‘s a hot day in Middle Earth do you join
Boromir on a „surprise inspection“ of cool Henneth Annun bearing ice cream?
Faramir in getting the BBQ ready in expectation of said surprise?
Aragorn in hiding in the darkest part of the forest and camping there?
Gandalf in hiding in the deepest coolest part of Minas Tirith‘s library?
Sam in emergency watering the plants then relaxing in his hammock with cherries?
Frodo in sleeping through the heat in the coolest room of bag end?
Legolas in going water skiing?
Merry in joining a sandcastle building contest?
Pippin in organising an ice cream eating contest?
Gollum in lying in a puddle loaning and complaining?
Gimli in starting a diy project Deep underground
Eowyn in trying to go to the beach but getting sunburnt before getting there
Gollum is of course moaning not loaning
I meant to vote for Faramir so I could be helpful but I accidentally voted Gollum and it’s actually more accurate.

When summer evenings feel like this gif it’s beautiful and it’s worth it
Dave Brandt was so much more than a meme. He partnered with universities to experiment with and expand soil conservation and cover crop techniques, worked to educate other farmers through worldwide conventions and direct mentorship, founded the Soil Health Academy, and was called the "Obi-Wan Kenobi of soil health" by the chief of the USDA's conservation department.
There is no healthy planet without healthy ag practices, and this guy was a legend.
The A-horizon on his farm was 4 feet deep
You do not understand
Most modern Ag operations don’t even have a proper A-Horizon. They’re too busy turning the earth every time they replant. The A-horizon is the Black Gold that makes Soil Soil. It’s a structurally complex soil horizon that must be built in place by the interactions of Plants and Fungi and Insects. It is The Thing that soaks up rain and holds onto it for plants. The A-Horizon is The Thing that builds up when you let a field sit fallow. The act of tilling creates fecundity by breaking up the A-horizon. On a really good Organic no-till farm you might find an A-horizon between 3-6 inches.
His A-horizon was 4 feet deep. 50 inches.
I-
I have no context. His farm was covered in a living skin thick enough for a child to stand in.
Gives me hope for what we could accomplish if we got our collective heads on straight, you know? Like. This was one guy. A brilliant man, who knew what he was up to, but. The thing about brilliant ideas is they can be shared.
50 inches. The mind reels.
This is so much more impressive than I can understand and comprehend and I would love to know more about A horizon
Do you love the color of the Soil?
Humus, or Humic Compounds, are a cryptic and poorly understood set of organic substances. As the final metabolic result of once-living things being digested first by macroscopic organisms, and then by microorganisms, they resist most forms of analysis, and have cryptic structures. A few that we have managed to isolate and study are the Humic & Fulvic Acids.
Humus has a number of remarkable tendencies. It is capable of retaining water far better than any raw mineral clay; it also retains electrically charged clay granules, which themselves retain mineral ions, all of which is essential to make a soil a high-quality resource for Plants to grow in.
A composter is a box that contains an environment that is conducive to the production of Humus, but the best way to produce it is in-place, by laying layers of organic material down over an unbroken earth and growing things out of that. The interaction of the plants rooting, the fungus weaving itself through everything, the bacteria and archaea metabolizing as they do, and inorganic weathering forces all combine to gradually build up the microscopic equivalent of a complex megastructure capable of retaining far more water, and containing far more nutrients, than any inorganic substrate.
This stuff is black gold. This is the stuff that determines whether or not a plot of land is going to be “productive.” The knowledge of how to make it, how to care for it, is an essential piece of wisdom that our civilization needs to remember.
Fortunately, folks seem to have the right response:
Farmers are more important to the continuity of civilization than administrators, no matter what the elitists say. This knowledge is important.
