Starínas

And that’s what this blog will be about.  Rock star starinas.

For the record, I am not a rock star - I’ve gone straight from wannabe to has-been without stopping in the middle, but maybe that’s why this blog will be more interesting.   Bookstores are filled with biographies of rock stars with nearly identical stories of the making of their songs, the internet is filled with music of small artists with no biographies and no stories, yet the unknown artists may have the more interesting stories to say.

So are these rock-star starinas, i.e. starinas of a rock star or are they the star starinas, i.e. highlight stories of a rock band?   To quote my former bandmate Ilir: “Why can’t it be both?”

If you read this soon, it’ll be the latter, but as time goes by, it might be more and more of the former.  

On a final note - a starina is not just a new word for the sake of using a new word.  It’s a new concept.   A starina is not just an anecdote, not just an interesting incident that happened while the song was being composed - it’s the event that directly lead to the making of the song.  It’s not just what the song is about or the meaning behind the lyrics - it’s the meaning behind the actual music itself.  It isn’t just the story of what happened, it’s a story of how that event was transformed into sound.  It’s the creative process explained.   It’s a chance for the artist, not to place you on his side to see what they saw, any webcam can do that, but to take you into the depths of their mind.
