Creating Sigils based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
If you need ideas and suggestions for what kind of sigils to create, consider using Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs as a guide to give you enough ideas to make your own personal grimoire of sigils. You can even use it to get ideas to make your own non-sigil spells. You can also use it as a template for organizing your book of shadows.
Maslow's hierarchy can be surprisingly useful as a map for magical practice because it gives you a way to ask what need am I actually trying to address?
One approach is to treat each level as a "sphere of operation":
1. Physiological Needs 🍞
Health, energy, food, housing, material stability
2. Safety Needs 🛡️
Protection, warding, financial security, overcoming fear
3. Love and Belonging 🤝
Friendship, community, family harmony, finding one's tribe
4. Esteem Needs 👑
Confidence, charisma, reputation, skill development
5. Self-Actualization 🌟
Creativity, life purpose, mastery, spiritual development
6. Self-Transcendence ✨
Communion with the divine, service, mystical experiences
For a magician, this can become a diagnostic tool.
Before casting, ask:
"Which need is this working actually serving?"
For example:
A prosperity sigil might not really be about money. It might be about safety.
A glamour spell might not be about attractiveness. It might be about esteem.
A devotion to your patron deity might not be about obtaining favors. It might be about self-transcendence.
Note: Remember that this is more of a guide than an instruction. I'm just saying that Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs can be used as a map to creating and organizing spells and rituals. I think it's worth experimenting with.
The social forces that prevent you from being able to admit to your own desires in the safety of your own mind are far more evil than any desire you could have.
Unacted desires are fundamentally neutral, and you can't decide what to do about the things you want unless you can admit to yourself what they are in the first place. Everyone has desires that would hurt other people if they acted on them, but most people would not actually go out and do anything they know would cause harm. Far more harm is done in this world by people who are trying to pretend they can't possibly want anything they think is bad than people running around going "ehehehe I love hurting people!"
Providing people with a way of exploring the dark parts of ourselves in a way that cannot hurt anyone is one of the purposes of both fiction and kink.
All of us have a hungry, horny, angry, scared animal inside ourselves. You do not need to excuse or justify what that animal wants, it simply is. You cannot escape it. Lying to yourself about the animal that you are will only give you less control over it, not more.

Don't kill your gods.
Yup. Time for something inflammatory.
Imagine a furniture designer. They have an idea for a great new table. It lives only in their head for now. They have not yet drawn it. No one has yet criticized it.
Any artist will know that what winds up on paper isn't quite as perfect as what they saw in their head. But yet, if it stays in your head, it's not real. So the furniture designer creates. Now people find fault with it.
Everyone has a different idea of what "perfect" means. So the design is loved by some and hated by others. But it is still perfect in a way: it has no specific color or size yet. It can't be too big or too small for a kitchen.
Then, the table goes into production. It has sizes and colors, with which certain people find fault. Not perfect because it's green. Not perfect because it is too small.
No one has used it yet. It still lacks the little bumps, scrapes, and stains that it will acquire from human contact. From being loved, somewhere.
From perfect to imperfect is a spectrum, and imperfection is the cost of living. Of interacting. Of being loved.
Now let's talk about stories. Now, you are alive. You can make choices. You get to tell your own stories. People listen.
When you die, you no longer make new stories. You cannot tell them. Everyone who remembers you tells your stories for you; they make edits to suit the dignity of your memory. If you were very important, generations who no longer remember you make even more -- they edit your values, your politics, they scrub away flaws. In essence, this is a kind of decay. Just like your body decomposes as bacteria metabolize it, the deeds you did are metabolized by culture.
What does it mean to call the gods "perfect" and to deny any evidence to the contrary? They are edited, politically and theologically, to match some imperfect clergy's cultural ideas of perfection. They no longer produce new stories. If new ones are made, they are discredited. They are too "vast" to interact with. They are no longer in a relationship with humanity. They are not loved. Not really.
To push someone higher is to push them away.
Many people have conversion experiences. They have visions. They talk to someone on the astral, maybe, and see miracles that flow from that relationship. Then, they become pious. Priests curate and correct their experiences. Eventually, the experiences stop.
The god is no longer a person, but a political tool. They cannot speak, and they have no ability to create or tell their own stories. They are vast. They are everything to everyone. They are nowhere in particular, and yet everywhere.
They are dead.
That is not praise or kindness.

Knowing that trans women of color started the movement in the united states and were literally immediately erased and excluded from what they started is the most deeply jading knowledge.
It is the original sin of the so-called queer community and it damns it from the cradle.
no white gay boy will ever reblog this, watch:
no white gay will reblog this
no white lgb person will reblog this
Without Stonewall, without the efforts of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, the LGBTQ Community wouldn’t be where it is today. Don’t forget the roots, don’t forget the catalyst.
and then TERFs wanna be like, “hmm well the LGBT community existed before Stonewall!”
but like…Becky, of course LGBTQ+ people existed before Stonewall. We’ve all existed since the beginning of time. But the movement got a shock to its senses, a jump-start, a rocket-into-space when that glass shattered via Marsha P. Johnson, and when Sylvia Rivera was up on-stage protesting guess who was on the sidelines heckling her?
The same fuckers who won’t ever reblog or acknowledge this
My apologies to the original poster as I photo captured this post to add to the thread-I reposted this last year for pride and expect to repost it every year I have left-it’s our history people.
Marsha P. Johnson allegedly died of suicide in 1992, and her death was never investigated. Even I, a mere prole, could catch the “she was murdered” vibes from the circumstances surrounding the discovery of her body.
Without a trans black woman, LGBT+ rights would not exist. Never forget. Never “pay it no mind”.
R E M E M B E R
And whatever you do, don’t watch that awful movie Stonewall. Go watch a documentary on Marsha P. Johnson instead.
there’s a wonderful documentary on netflix called the death and life of marsha p. johnson! very powerful watch.
every white person ever should reblog this

Sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone and read that book that's more than a decade or even century old to learn more about magic and witchery.
You have to interact with literature and media that isn't within your own echo chamber.
You need regular confrontations with opinions and ideas outside your own bubble otherwise you. will. not. grow.
You must be able to read things critically, knowing that picking up a book and reading it does not equal you believing every word.
Learn about how others view the world, learn how people's beliefs work, learn how to intake information without assuming that every bit of information is on a binary of "good" or "bad" information.
This is the witchy version of me telling you, lovingly, to go touch grass.
im currently feeling kinda.. disconnected from the gods? advice?
Find out the reason for the disconnect. Is it burnout? Do you put too much pressure on yourself in your practice? Is it a general exhaustion? Or are you not putting enough attention to yourself?
Connect with yourself. Make time for your hobbies and interests and don't think of them as offerings or devotional acts. Light a candle not for a Deity, just for you. Make your favourite meal.
Take some time off from curating your life around your practice.
Then, after spending some time with yourself, you may naturally regain your need for Gods' companionship. And then you can approach your practice with new enthusiasm.
Maybe it's a sign that something in your current practice is not working for you. Take some time off, and then look at your current way with a fresh eye.
someone could probably say something pretty about fossils, constellations, and stars in the sky
poem inspired by this rock and also by @two-bees-poetry
Recent discourse reminds me of that cult indoctrination trick that's often used to weed out more difficult marks early on, where they tell you all that you aren't allowed to eat rice on Tuesdays and then if you protest they go "wow SOMEBODY likes rice a little much huh" as if you're the fucking weirdo who cares too much about how much rice is consumed between Monday and Wednesday instead of them.
And this forces you to decide whether your autonomy matters to you more than the approval of the group - while they'll still act like you're on thin ice either way, if you give in at this point they know you're theirs forever, because now they've established a foothold, you've shown a moral weakness, which they will brand you with so it can be used against you in the future ("hey RICE-addict here doesn't want help break into the city records office") to force you to double-down and isolate you further.
And if instead you do decide to push back further, after your abrupt departure from the group ("You're seriously leaving us over RICE?!? Seriously?") and subsequent ostracism, you can then be used as a demonstration to the others who were more pliable, of how the outgroup is full of people like you who are obsessed with violating the No-Tuesday-Rice rule to the point where they'll abandon all their friends, who cared so much for them, so it clearly isn't an arbitrary restriction, you're the kind of monster these rules are intended to protect them from, thus all the other wise and esoteric precepts of the charismatic leader are implied to be equally justified.
This isn't just for cults either! Shitty partners, bosses, friends - they all do variants of this where if you kick back the first time they make an unreasonable request, it proves you weren't ever committed since you'd let such a small thing ruin everything. And of course, if it's the third or the tenth unreasonable thing they ask of you, it's SUCH A SMALL THING to be a deal-breaker at this late point in your relationship!

The truth is that if you ever want to advance your practice you need to learn about a lot more than witchcraft. world religions, politics, history, and especially the history of persecution are great places to start. True power comes from knowing the world and how you fit into it. A lot of people only care about the magic part of witchcraft when the learning and researching part is wayyy more important.
You also need skills other than witchcraft. There's botany, since gathering your own plants for spells is an easy way to advance. Reading comprehension is extremely important, every witch should be able to read and understand books like the bible. You need to be skilled in at least one form of creation, wether its cooking, baking, drawing, writing, whittling, literally any skill were you make something. The Act of Creation is extremely powerful and spiritual, and you need to understand how to make something before you learn how to break it.
If you want to advance your craft, you have to advance yourself. Also, its impossible to advance in your craft or your life if your not being honest with yourself. Life is a preformance, but you need to preform only for yourself. You are your own audience, critic, and fan. I feel like there is a epidemic of people who only react to the world instead of acting in the world.
You are how the universe perceives itself, you actively change the universe with your mindset and perspective. I feel like we all have this learned helplessness that we need to follow the path that is expected of us, when Witchcraft is about being the harbinger of chaos. You need to quit listening to people, question literally everything from the politicans to the stars and to the god. The purpose of life is to control the self and by extension the world around you. How can you do that when you are being controlled by something else.
Everyone is always learning, and there is no shame in not being there yet. But, so much of modern witchcraft is so zoomed in that most people don't realize the power you are capable of.
I agree with a lot of this but we have to be careful of gatekeeping, especially around things like reading comprehension and financial abilities. For centuries, most craft-based work was learned orally so that is also a valid path - learning from others who know their stuff.
Thank you for this addition 🖤
