i really don't think i'll ever stop thinking about how the entire farseer trilogy is filtered through fitz putting his worst pain in girl-on-a-dragon. like the first time you read the series you might not notice too much, but once you find that out, and especially once he gets those memories back at the end of fool's fate, it becomes so much more obvious and it's incredible. like yeah he casually got rid of his memories of his mother, his happiest times with molly, and his time in regal's dungeon plus whatever other mish mash of stuff he thought he couldn't live with anymore!!! and as a result he couldn't experience life to the fullest!!! his entire recounting of the story is colored by the fact that he couldn't recall the full breadth of emotions he felt!!!!!! or even all of the events that happened!!!!!!!! i know this has been talked about by so many people before but i just find myself thinking about it every second of every day

obviously fool’s fate changed my life and whatnot but to this day the only rote moment that made me actively bawl was the scene in assassin’s apprentice when chade stops summoning fitz for the purpose of shrewd’s loyalty test and he starts crying in his bed because he thinks everyone who ever cared about him has abandoned him. it literally makes my throat close up to think about. hobb writes the misery and grief of a lonely child with such sickening reality and it’s what keeps assassin’s apprentice in my top 5 i do not care what anybody else says
