The spring air, full of pollen and sweet, upbeat music felt refreshing. The Flower Dance wasn't Harvey's favorite festival, but it was a nice chance to get out of the clinic for a day and enjoy the season. Maru stood beside him, pulling on the collar of her white Flower dress.
"I should've ironed this yesterday. It's crinkled from being in the closet all year" she said, mostly to herself.
Harvey wasn't listening anyway. His attention had shifted the moment the farmer arrived at the festival. Still in their muddy overalls, they looked breathless and slightly out of place. It'd only been a few weeks since they moved to Stardew Valley, but they'd caught his eye the moment they'd met.
He must've been staring too long, because Maru cleared her throat and cocked an eyebrow up.
"You should ask the farmer to dance with you this year" she said, giving him a little poke in the arm.
Harvey felt himself blush.
"Oh, nonsense, we've only spoken a handful of times. Besides, I already told you I'd dance with you!"
"If you don't, I will! Seriously though, I've seen the way you look at them. They even brought you coffee the other day! Just ask!"
Courage was starting to build up, and he made up his mind. If the farmer came to talk to him (which it looked as if they were saying hello to everyone in town), then he'd ask them to dance.
As expected, the farmer made a few more stops to talk to the neighbors, then made their way over to where Harvey and Maru were standing.
"Hi!" They greeted excitedly, "It's such a beautiful spring day. Are you excited for the dance?"
Harvey opened his mouth to ask his question, but froze. Maru jumped in.
"I like dancing, but this one is a little stilted. The old timers really love it, though"
The farmer smiled and nodded. Maru tucked a braid behind her ear, and for a moment Harvey thought she was going to ask the farmer to dance before he could.
The farmer turned to him, a bright smile still on their face.
"How about you, Doctor? You look kinda anxious"
His blushing must've been obvious. He bit the inside of his cheek and decided to go for it.
"I'm working up the courage to ask someone to dance with me" he said.
The farmer frowned, but only for a moment.
"Oh, well this might be awkward now, but I was actually hoping you would dance with me"
Joy, relief, and a tinge of embarrassment flooded over Harvey (He's a doctor, for Yoba's sake! He shouldn't be cowering like a schoolboy over asking someone to dance!).
"Oh! You... want to dance with me? Yes. I'd love to!"
The farmer grabbed him by the arm.
"Great! Hope you don't mind that I'm not dressed up. Or that I don't know how to dance"
