Maryland will become the first US state to ban surveillance pricing in retail stores, after passing Protection from Predatory Pricing Act.
Jesus fucking christ that this exists in the first place
I WAS FUCKING WONDERING WHAT THOSE DIGITAL PRICE TAGS WERE ABOUT SUDDENLY i had hoped they were so the workers didn't have to finagle those little papers into the slider part anymore 😭
Hi, yes, that is the OFFICIAL excuse made to me by the guy replacing the paper tags with digital ones at my local Walmart, but the end goal is to remove the numbers off the shelf entirely, replacing them with QR codes that you have to scan with the app…. Which requires your login information….. and also stores your card information so even if you didn’t use your Walmart account at the physical checkout, if you used a card they recognize, they assign that purchase to your Walmart account purchase history.
I explained very clearly to the manager my issue with the meat section not having the price tags listed, and they claimed it was only going to be for the meat, since meat is by weight, and the price of each item is printed on the packs of each item.
Sure. That’s how they get their foot in the door. Fast forward not even two weeks, and here we are:
Bar codes. No prices, no item descriptions. No price stickers on the individual items. Heck, not even the name of the item that is SUPPOSED to be there.
No. The only way to see the price is to scan it on your phone app, which is also recording what you looked at recently, as a way of gauging what you might be looking for in the future.
So here’s what we’re gonna do gang:
Every time you go into a store that has implemented these price-less tags:
Take 1-3 items up to the cash register. Ask the cashier for the price, or hit the price check item on the self checkout, which will likely call over the attendant.
Express that you didn’t actually want it, you just couldn’t see on the shelf how much it was.
POLITELY, AND WITH A THANK YOU FOR THE PRICE CONFIRMATION, Give the items to the cashier or attendant to put back.
When they inevitably try to push the app, politely decline. If pressed for why not, say you don’t want to have to carry your phone in-hand the whole time you are shopping in order to see how much things cost. (Not having cell service or data to use the app is NOT a valid excuse, as stores already often have complimentary WiFi AND more stores will provide WiFi rather than give up on this push for surveillance pricing)
If it’s a shelf-stable item, the cashier will have to set it aside, taking up room in their limited operating space, and eventually pass it off to someone to put in a holding area to put back later. If it’s a fridge/freezer item, it might have to get tossed due to food product sale regulations.
In either case, you are making it a pain in the ass for them to have these digital bar codes. Tie up the checkouts. Give the employees more busywork that the company has to pay them to do. Hurt their bottom line having to toss the pint of ice cream you carried around in your cart for 20 minutes before giving it back to the cashier.
Yes, call your reps. Yes, push for more legislation like this in more places. But also take an extra minute out of your shopping trip to MAKE IT HURT for companies to pull this shit.
I've seen some people in the notes express (very fair) concern that this is only going to inconvenience already under-paid laborers, and not have any impact on corporate. While I can't speak for every company or every store, I do work in a grocery store and I can tell you this is precisely the kind of thing that would have an impact, especially if people are doing it en masse. Stores absolutely track their shrink numbers, and they do draw distinctions between what gets stolen, damaged, or wasted for other reasons. If people are making it clear that the reason they're bringing things to the cashier is that the prices are not adequately represented on the displays, and rather than improving business it's wasting product, slowing down transactions, and causing confusion and mistrust in customers, that is a language that shareholders speak.
I worked in retail for years. If this had happened while I was working retail, I would have been delighted and felt great solidarity with anyone who was wasting my employer's time and money and giving me busy work as an act of protest. In point of fact every moment the employee spends carting items back to the shelves is a moment not spent standing at a register.
Okay hear me out on this
An Optimus Prime x human reader fic, but the human heavily reminds the autobots of Optimus Prime.
Not Orion Pax, no, *Optimus Prime*, as in they have great leadership skills, can hold themselves in serious situations, prioritizes their friends/coworkers over themselves, overall just a perfect model of human determination and restraint.
Bonus: Optimus Prime falls first, but the reader genuinely doesn’t catch on due to their busy lifestyle outside of the autobots.
Alternatively, a Megatron (or Decepticon) x Human Reader fic where the reader is genuinely just nonchalant in their hostage situation. There’s no screaming, no threats, no corny one liners, but silent plotting and obvious fake compliance. And the Decepticons KNOW that human is up to something, but they don’t actually prepare for it until it’s almost too late (their first scarily smart escape attempt)
I’ve had this concept of like, a 30+ mechanic y/n with a younger crew being dragged into the autobot and decepticon situation, which gave birth to the ideas above. I certainly wouldn’t be able to write it though.

NRaas Needs Your Assistance!
Do you use the NRaas mods? Has the information on the NRaas website and forum ever been useful to you? If so, a moment of your time please!
I’d like to share the current situation with Simblr – which you can also read about directly from the site owner here: https://www.nraas.net/community/topic15428
While it seemed like we were entering an era of old-internet revival and indie websites in the fight against the dead-internet, a significant road block has emerged. Prices have inflated drastically for server parts, memory, storage, and server-hosting itself. This puts all non-profit online communities in peril.
As a result, the site owner has opened a Patreon so that the community can help cover the costs of keeping us online.
Important clarification:
The NRaas mods are NEVER going to be paywalled. The project will remain open-source and free for everyone. Donations are optional.
These mods are still in active development! The site and mods have been maintained by Chain_Reaction since Twallan's retirement, providing countless updates and support. Lots of cool stuff over there if you haven't updated in a hot minute.
There is no pressure to donate if your situation does not allow for it. Thank you for the consideration!
Long post ahead with information on the situation and some incentives for reaching membership goals.
Update:
Hi everyone!
The NRaas site is going to be unavailable for the next 10 days or so as we migrate to a new server - thanks to the incredible support!
The notice about this on the site will also go down in a few more hours, so hopefully you'll see this or the MTS post to reassure that we haven't fallen off the face of the earth.
Thank you all for the generosity, whether it was in the form of a donation or sharing this post.
god remember when there were no ads AND you could post dick on here. take me back i'll be grateful this time

alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined

TFP Smokescreen gets transported to TFA.
Reactions of both Autobots and Decepticons to knowing he saved TFP Optimus instead of becoming the new Chosen One of Cybertron, please.
(Smokescreen: It's no big deal. Anyone could have done the same. Sentinel "my comatose boss/mentor is great propaganda" Prime and Starcream: . . .Yeahhh, totally.)
-Immediately, Optimus admires Smokescreen. Yes, he's loud and a bit brash but he's a good mech, someone who values others more than he cares about his own reputation and power. After this, Optimus finds himself getting closer to Smokescreen, as he now sees him as someone he can trust and rely on.
-Ratchet had originally found Smokescreen to be yet just another loud youth, scrambling for fame, but after this admission, he finds himself reassessing his view on the mech. Clearly he's got a good head on his shoulders, even if he kinda childish.
-Bumblebee feels a bit guilty because he's not sure he would have done the same in Smokescreen's situation. He hopes that he would but the idea of fame and power is really tempting, which doesn't sound very heroic now that he thinks about. Feels bad about it and kinda stays away from both Smokescreen and his own Optimus because of this.
-To Bulkhead, this makes Smokescreen as a real hero and an overall great person. He put the life of his friend above his own desires which makes him super cool! Bulkhead already liked Smokescreen from the get-go so this just elevated his already high opinion of him.
-Yeah, Prowl already got that feeling from him, back when they first met. Sure, Smokescreen is loud and, in many ways, immature, but he gives off this honest aura that makes one want to trust him. He does not feel like a selfish person. Still, Prowl only fully allows himself to trust Smokescreen after this revelation.
