guiding winds
ordinary
➥ Atsu x Oyuki
Summary: While the days fill with sunlight, tea, music, and small moments of peace, Atsu finds herself secretly capturing Oyuki in ink again and again—trying to hold onto the beauty of ordinary moments that feel far too precious to lose.
A/N: My darlings, I love these two oh so much. I feel like this is most definitely another moment that they would genuinely share; Atsu painting Oyuki, and moments she wants to keep. This beautiful art depicts exactly how I imagine it. <3

The rebuilt house no longer smelled of burning fire or old grief.
It smelled of fresh wood, of earth turned by careful hands, of blooming flowers on a new garden, of tea leaves warming in iron.
Atsu sometimes still expected the walls of her childhood home to echo with ghosts, but instead they held laughter now—soft, domestic sounds that felt almost unreal after everything that had come before. Footsteps on the wooden floors as Kiku prepared the table. The clink of a plate as food was set down. The low, patient hum of a shamisen being tuned by skilled hands.
Oyuki. She had become part of the house the way sunlight had; quietly, indispensably.
happy valentine's day everyone! 🦊💐🐺
— A place to belong
A/N: A vignette I wrote fully inspired by @stan-wlw 's beautiful art here. <3 Please go give it the love it deserves! This piece in particular imprinted on my memory, so it's about time I write a little something for it! (Note: Sun is an old measurement for length used in Edo-period Japan that converts to roughly three centimeters or a little over an inch. I use it instead of modern measurements, but it may not have been used at the time in literature to describe a distance like I do here.)
Oyuki’s eyes flutter shut slowly as she leans into Atsu’s touch. Lips slightly parted, waiting patiently for Atsu to close the space between them. Utterly beautiful in her openness. Her pull is magnetic: like the sweetest of songs she plays on her shamisen, inviting Atsu to sink into it; to breathe in the melody, let it reach her heart. Irresistible. Atsu slides her hand down Oyuki’s shoulder to the neckline of her yukata, holding the edge of it with a feather-light touch. The loose fabric gives way to smooth, warm skin under Atsu’s fingertips, beckoning her further. She stops right on the edge of the promise of Oyuki’s rising and falling chest, the swell of her breast mere suns away. The thought of slipping the fabric down from Oyuki’s shoulders right away is tempting—almost overwhelmingly so—, but Atsu wants to sink into this quiet moment before going further. To feel Oyuki’s lips on hers. To kiss her slowly and sweetly, with no rush in the world. They have time. Time, which before was running shorter each day, death waiting for Atsu to join her parents in a flash of cold steel: either that of her enemies’ or her own. An inevitability that she thought was set in stone from the moment her life burned down with her family’s ginkgo tree. No more. Atsu lives in the present now. The ginkgo tree survived, and so did she. Oyuki’s presence makes it easier to slip into this new life that Atsu never thought was meant for her. A contentedness that was never hers to claim. For her to feel… happy. At times, she still can’t quite believe it. The ghosts of the past linger in her mind even now, but each day, they grow a little quieter—pushed aside by what Atsu has in her life now. Kiku, Oyuki… a family. A place to belong. Right here, in Oyuki’s arms. Atsu closes the space between them, brushing her lips over Oyuki’s slowly, each move deliberate. She savors this contact, their one-of-a-kind connection. Oyuki responds earnestly, matching each of Atsu’s movements heartbeat by heartbeat. No imagination will ever compare to the real caress of Oyuki’s lips—sweet and oh so attentive, like Atsu was the most precious thing to her in the world. The sensation leaves Atsu’s head swimming every time. Time blurs, as does the world around them. When the spark in their kisses grows to a deep-set fire steady in its purpose, Atsu’s hand slides down further, eager to embrace every part of Oyuki’s body. And to share her body and spirit in turn. No more hasty, desperate touches with strangers in hunt of a quick release on the streets of Ōsaka, but making love, tenderly. Holding someone so close to your heart that you never want to let go. “I love you, Yuki,” Atsu whispers, the confession a warm breath against Oyuki’s lips. Her reply comes sweet, its sincerity even more striking than the fire between them. “I love you, too, Atsu. More than anything.”

just a small boundary: this is a comfy little corner for art, vibes, and personal interpretations. i really do love talking about atsuyuki when it comes from genuine curiosity, even when people disagree with me. i just won’t engage with what feels like sea-lioning, trolling, ragebaiting, or circular debates in my ask inbox. 🍵 😌
that said, thank you so much to everyone who’s been sharing thoughts in good faith. i see you and really appreciate it. 💖 if there’s anything you wanna ask/discuss/talk about, and it’s coming from a genuine place, keep them coming! 🫶
Thank you for answering my question about the "older sister" thing. Your description of it definitely feels very fitting to what we see in Atsu and Oyuki, I agree that it doesn't sound like a definition of the relationship itself. As you said, because of Oyuki's dynamic with Atsu; the flirting, the teasing, the pauses and looks, and the lack of hierarchy; be honest, a literal sisterly definition would not fit them, would it? lol I also recently learned that whenever female relationships have romantic vibes, they're often called "sister-like" behind the scenes, so to get around specific censorship, or to describe a relationship that goes beyond just sexualized passion, do you know if that's correct? Because if so, it feels like it's the definition that would mostly suit Atsu and Oyuki. And do you really think that the romance and chemistry between them was an intentional choice by Sucker Punch? That they really want to invite the player to interpret it that way? If so that's a relief, I was hoping it had been intentional!
hi again! :) like i mentioned, i completely understand where non-romantic interpretations are coming from, but i don’t really think there’s a single behind-the-scenes “truth” to uncover here. i’m mostly just sharing how the story read to me as a player and a creative, not trying to confirm intent or decode industry practices. the game feels very deliberately open, and that openness is part of why it resonates differently for different people 😁
honestly, i try not to overthink intent too much. i mostly go by what’s on screen and how it made me feel, and for me, that was enough 🙂↕️
i also really love that there are a lot of people who felt something similar about #atsuyuki and had a comparable experience playing the game. knowing that these moments and emotions resonated with others in the same quiet way has been really meaningful to me and inspires me to create art about them. 💛
sorry if this comes across as a bit of a non-answer, but i hope you’re still able to find some relief in our little yotei corner regardless 😅
Hi, how are you? I saw that you said you're always happy to talk about Atsu and Oyuki, so I wanted to jump into the conversation! Jeannie Bolet, Oyuki's VA, recently participated in a live stream, and was asked about Atsu and Oyuki's relationship, how it was described behind the scenes. And she said Oyuki was described like an "older sister". But, she also didn't discredit the possible romance! At first I was a little bothered by that answer, as I too love Atsu and Oyuki as a couple! But as I think about it, I wonder if this could actually be good news instead, for one to finally be sure that the devs' intentions were never for Oyuki to be a mother-figure to Atsu. And for another, her being described as an "older sister", to me at least, seems actually to leave the relationship very much open for interpretation...? And the term only being used to describe the meaningful affection that they develop for each other. I hope so, at least, because just as your other anon, I too don't want to be wrong when I see Atsu and Oyuki as a couple! Would you maybe have any opinions about this?
hi! i’m doing well, thanks, and thanks for joining in on the convo too :)
about the “older sister” description from Jeannie, my take is that she was probably describing the energy she leaned into while performing Oyuki, rather than setting a hard definition of the relationship itself. from my experience working in film production, this kind of language can also come from behind the scenes direction. actors often use simple relational labels as internal shorthand or are given them as guidance. esp since scenes and lines aren’t recorded in order, they need a consistent anchor to return to when stepping into a scene. something like “older, steadier, mentor-like” helps shape tone and posture, especially when the scene partner is close in age in real life.
because of that, i don’t really hear “older sister” as a literal in-world framing. it sounds more like a behind-the-scenes way to describe Oyuki’s calm, grounded presence, in contrast to Atsu’s more wild, younger, and reckless nature. and when you compare it to Oyuki’s dynamic with Dojun, where she actually kinda raised and trained him, the difference becomes pretty clear. that kind of hierarchy just isn’t there with Atsu.
with Atsu, the relationship feels built on mutual recognition and emotional exchange. Oyuki isn’t guiding her from above or shaping her path, she’s meeting her where she already is. to me, that kind of steadiness doesn’t cancel out romance. it’s often what allows it to grow. love doesn’t always come from intensity or drama. sometimes it comes from finally feeling safe enough to soften.
the game also seems very intentional about hinting at that. the flirtatious lines, the teasing, the pauses and looks all feel placed on purpose. they invite the player to sense that there’s something more than friendship there, without ever spelling it out. those moments don’t read as accidental to me. they feel like quiet nudges.
so i don’t think reading them romantically is stretching the story. i think it’s responding to how the relationship is written and framed. the game trusts the player to pick up on emotional subtext rather than labeling it outright, and that’s part of why their connection feels so resonant to me.
that’s just how i experienced it and how these characters made me feel. i’m sure others have different views, but i think that’s part of the beauty of this game. 💛
Hello! I'm the anon who sent the ask about Atsu and Oyuki the other day, thank you so much for answering, reading your thoughts about them was a joy <3 I agree that one of the things that stands out the most about them is how easy and comfortable they feel around each other, I don't think there's anyone else who could understand them like they understand each other. Also, despite everything, do you think Atsu genuinely grows to love Oyuki? I'm mostly wondering if I'm interpreting things correctly, you know? If the feelings between them, the immense care, the love that they seem to develop and have for each other are really there, and not just something I was perhaps making up in my mind loll. Because I can't see them as anything other than two people who, despite all they went through, irrevocably fell in love with each other. The developers say that there's no outright romance for Atsu during the events of the game, which is fair, considering what she's going through during it. In Ghost of Tsushima, the same happened for Jin and Yuna; So I don't think this excludes the connection and love that blossoms between Atsu and Oyuki, right? It leads me to believe that yes, the devs are very much aware of the chemistry between them and the hints for a future romance were indeed intentional. I just wanted to know if I'm interpreting things correctly or not lol <3
hi! thank you so much for coming back. i’m really glad my previous answer resonated with you and i'm always happy to talk about Atsu & Oyuki haha
to answer your question, personally, yes, i do think Atsu genuinely grows to love Oyuki. not in a sudden or sweeping way, but in something much quieter and deeper that unfolds over time. while playing, it never felt forced or imagined to me. it felt like something that emerged naturally through shared trust, care, and emotional safety.
what really solidified it for me was how Atsu changes around Oyuki. she softens. she hesitates. she starts questioning herself, her purpose, and what comes after everything when revenge is no longer the only priority. she begins to see the possibility of building a life beyond it.that kind of internal shift doesn’t usually happen without something profound taking root. whether the devs label it explicitly as “romantic” during the game or not, the emotional weight of it feels undeniable.
i also don’t think you’re misreading things at all. their bond reads as mutual understanding, protection, longing, and choice. and i think it’s important that the game leaves space for that interpretation. the absence of an outright romance doesn’t negate the feelings, especially given the context of Atsu’s journey. if anything,it makes the connection feel more honest and restrained, shaped by circumstance rather than spectacle.
like you mentioned with Jin & Yuna, Ghost of Tsushima has always been comfortable letting intimacy exist without neatly defining it. that ambiguity feels intentional to me. it allows the player to sit with the emotions rather than be told exactly what they are. it’s a very challenging kind of storytelling, to evoke romance or chemistry without spelling it out, but i think that’s part of why it feels so sincere when it lands.
so no, i don’t think you’re making it up in your head.i think you’re responding to something the story very deliberately invites you to feel. that’s part of what makes their connection so powerful.
thank you again for such a kind and thoughtful ask. it’s really comforting to know others felt this too ♥♥

omg firstly I have to say that I LOVE your posts about Atsu and Oyuki, your drawings and pictures are so SO beautiful :')
Given that you also seem to see the romance between them, I wanted to ask, or rather talk, really, about their relationship. I haven't played the game yet, but I have seen everything about their scenes together (and I love them). But I've also stumbled upon the people who say that their relationship is not a romantic one, and leans more toward motherly (which, in my opinion, is the weird version, considering their flirting and tension during most scenes). I also think I've seen the developers state that they intentionally left the relationship between them as open for player interpretation...? Like, it was never stated that Atsu's and Oyuki's connection was meant to be platonic. I think it's just described as a really deep bond. So I just wanted your genuine opinion on how you interpret their whole relationship? How do you, as someone who I assume has played the game, genuinely see them?
hi! first of all, thank you so much for the kind words about my art, that really means a lot 🥺
as a big fan of Ghost of Tsushima, i played GoY right when it was released and tried to go in as open minded as possible, without reading much from the developers or reviews until i finished. everything i’m drawing from comes purely from how the game made me feel while playing. i wasn’t expecting any kind of romance for the main character, but as the story unfolded, i found myself feeling a very natural chemistry between these two. whether it was the writing, the dialogue, or the voice acting, (i played both the Japanese version for my first playthrough and then the English version for NG+,) and i just kept gravitating toward them.
as for atsuyuki more broadly, this is just my personal read. to me, their bond feels very deep, intimate, and emotionally charged based purely on my experience of the game, and that ambiguity is part of why their dynamic resonated so strongly with me.
when i experienced their scenes in game, what stood out to me was how easy and comfortable they felt with each other. even before i knew anything about Oyuki’s past, i sensed that both of them had clearly been shaped by different kinds of trauma and hardened by time, but when they were together, there was a softness there. it felt like they could let their guard down a little, like they were able to put some of that weight aside, even if only briefly.
as a creative, my personal theory is that this deep connection was shown very intentionally as part of the story’s emotional backbone. by letting the player feel how strong and genuine their bond is, it makes Atsu’s eventual position much more painful and complex. she is faced with an impossible choice between sworn revenge and the possibility of forgiveness. that tension feels like a key emotional force carrying both the story and the gameplay forward.
i also think it’s completely okay that different players see different things in them. some people connect more with a nurturing or protective bond, others with romance, and neither takes away from how meaningful their relationship is. what matters most to me is that their connection feels sincere, grounded, and central to both of their emotional arcs.
that’s the lens i’m creating from with my art, just exploring the one that spoke to me the most 💛 thank you again for such a thoughtful question. 💖
