thinking again about mp100 as an autism allegory again. thinking about how mob clearly demonstrates low empathy but has high levels of compassion, and how important that is for him as a character and to low-empathy people who love the story

like. the LOL cult arc clearly demonstrates that he almost never mirrors or “feels” others’ emotions, even when doing so would benefit him. he feels like he’s a bad person, deeply so, and his rigidity about not using psychic powers on other people is often the only thing that he feels redeems him at all. (which is also extremely autistic of him.)

and yet - AND YET - he chooses, consistently, to be kind. he has to consciously think about being kind, to “pick up things that are important” to him, but he does it anyway. he cares about others, even when he can’t feel what they’re feeling. because he’s a good person. and that’s a pretty great depiction of what being a low-empathy autistic person is like.

The storyline where Cordelia has to flee from Betan psychiatric treatment makes so much sense when you consider the book was written during peak Satanic Panic: Shards of Honor was published in 1986; Michelle Remembers was published in 1980, and the McMartin preschool trial began in 1983.

The 1980s were an era when people were beginning to recognize the prevalence and harm of sexual abuse, but the public understanding was inherently tied up with conservative Christian conspiracy theories about Satanism. In this context it’s very pointed that in Shards of Honor, Cordelia does experience major trauma that it would probably be helpful to talk to a therapist about, but she actually can’t: the therapists don’t believe her because what happened doesn’t align with their political agenda, and even if they did believe her whole story parts of it would be used to hurt people she cares about.
