Chocolate Chess RP

Gordon took a sip of the coffee as he looked over the board. It took him a moment to realize she'd captured one of his rooks. A few more moves and she'd have him.

“Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!” Gordon gave a dramatic cry from his room.

He beamed at her as she makes it breathlessly to his room. He holds up the large, unfolded paper he had discovered. “A treasure map! I found a treasure map!”

Tiredness makes Lucy want to laugh hysterically, but it also brings exhausted tears to her eyes. Tiny Alan had kept her up half the night teething, and whilst Jeff was away and Grandma taking the other three to school she knew she just had to keep smiling for Gordon’s sake.

Gordon was silent as he realized answering that would probably get him in trouble. His father’s office was a ‘no little boys’ area. That just made it more exciting when he could get inside and look around.

She kissed his hair as he reached out to the X over the lake where they had gone camping two summers ago. He’d be too young to remember paddling on the little pebble beach, not wanting to leave the water for anything.

His nose scrunched as he examined the place she had indicated. It didn’t look that far. His hands could cover the line. Then the idea of everyone else getting to go with them sent a wave of excitement through him.

She didn’t have the heart to tell him they couldn’t go yet, Jeff had booked the cabin for the weekend after he got home. Four days of rest and relaxation, where Lucy thoroughly planned on not being the primary caregiver for the boys.

Gordon's eyes widened. "Daddy can come too?"

Gordon sat on the stool, leaning against the kitchen table. His eyes were in the woman in front of him as his hand grabbed the chess piece and deftly moved it to where he meant it to go.

Jen laughed at his dramatics, shaking her head as she retook her seat,

He moved off farther into the kitchen, giving a shout of "no cheating!" as he went. A few minutes later, he returned with a two cups of coffee, which he set on the table before jumping back in his seat.

Jen raised an eyebrow, checking the pawn wasn’t a decoy before she took it for her own. She smiled across to him,

Jen frowned at the loss, it wasn’t ideal, but she could cope with it. She glanced to her stash, saved for later, and noted that the pieces there were probably evenly matched to those Gordon had already eaten.

He smiled, glancing at his father’s desk. That part of him that always hurt seeing it empty threatened to bubble up through his carefully constructed mask of optimism.

It was easy to tell he was trying his hardest to keep the mask of confidence as he looked to his Father’s desk. In comparison to Scott though, any of his brothers’ emotions were easy to see though, no matter how hard they tried to hide their feelings.
