it's always "immortals always lose the ones they love!" and never "this family has had this incredible, powerful, loving figure present through generations of their lineage, all because they are descended from someone the immortal loved long ago" and i think that's a shame!!
me, quietly whispering to the ao3 page of an author who doesnāt even know I exist: I am obsessed with you
me, whispering to the ao3 page of an author who hasnāt updated anything in four years: I think about you often and I hope youāre alright
me, whispering to the ao3 page of an author who wrote one life altering banger and nothing else: I hope your pillow is cool and your skin is clear and you find money in a forgotten jeans pocket
Iām a strong proponent of lying to get the help you need. I always try the truthful route first but if that gets me nowhere? Lying it is.
I think itās important to respect other peopleās time, wellbeing and money so I donāt do it in situations where I know Iām in the wrong, like if I want to get into a place just for fun and someone could get in trouble for letting me in wrongfully Iād rather not.
But sometimes people just donāt understand why something is important in your situation so you have to turn it into something they understand. When I lived in England I constantly lied about being pregnant so gas station employees would let me use their bathroom because for some reason they didnāt have public bathrooms.
Or when my doctorās secretary couldnāt get it into her head that my stomach pains were very serious and concerning and insisted I couldnāt get an appointment this month so that evening I āfoundā a lump that I was pretty sure was nothing but it meant I had a reason to call her the next day and get a new appointment immediately and when the doctor told me the lump was harmless I could tell her what my real problem was and she immediately scheduled ALL the tests and examinations because she understood how concerning it was. I just had to get past the fucking secretary with a lie.
Fuck I even support that elderly man who lied about having four children who were stuck in a house during a flood but when the rescue team got there in a dinghy they realized it was four dogs. The guy knew he had to lie because he was too sick to help them himself (able bodied people in the area were able to save their own pets) and they wouldnāt have helped him if they knew it was ājust dogsā. In the video the rescue team can be seen choking up and padding him on the back while he cries with his scared dogs in his arms. The team is clearly not mad because they can see how important the dogs are to him but I have no doubt he was right in thinking they wouldnāt have helped if he had told them the truth.
So do what ya gotta do and lie lie lie.
Had to do this yesterday because insurance won't cover a certain test I needed without certain symptoms that I do not have. So I had to lie about having those in order to get the test, which I needed to make sure my infection is really gone. Otherwise I would have to wait and see, potentially letting a resistant strain of bacteria flare back up.
So yeah, lying when you need to is fine.
Power is not owed the truth
POWER IS NOT OWED THE TRUTH.

Wait, you were actually born in the 1900's? Thats so cool
i am going to eat my own entire skin
Reblog if you were born in the 1900's.
I was today years old. That is disgusting.
No Child Left Behind is one of the worst things to ever be incentivized in schools. It was signed into law when I was 14. Reading Rainbow was my show as a kid. LeVar Burton played a big part in why I became an avid reader to date. The joy of it. It's an adventure around the globe and through different time periods without stepping on a plane or time machine.
Children parrot behavior. In grade school, I always wanted to read the same amount of books as my teachers (50 books) and managed to double that each year. Before No Child Left Behind, book fairs and Scholastic catalogs were a serious matter like your grandma's Fingerhut catalogs. Libraries were (and still are) a wonderland.
Reading comprehension and proficiency in schools has been declining for decades. A crisis. The joy of books isn't pushed anymore and I'm always saddened by it. It's one of the reasons why I post my book reviews and recommendations on here, as well as posts from others to encourage reading and (novel) writing. Kids will parrot your behavior while the education system sadly fails to return as that example.
For those of us who aren't from the states, what - apart from apparently a shitty law - is that?
A law passed by Bush that cut funding to public schools whose students didn't improve every year on a set of standardized tests- meaning not that each student was supposed to improve during their time in school, but that this year's first graders had to do better on the tests than last year's first graders, and next year's had to do better still. Obviously this was really difficult over the short term and completely impossible over the long term.
This concentrated schools and other education programs entirely on those tests, especially schools with students who were already struggling, at the cost of art and music programs, home economics and shop type programs, and any in depth exploration of pretty much anything that wasn't on the test, which were pretty narrowly focused. Reading Rainbow was a relaxed encouragement to be imaginative and curious. It didn't teach kids the answers to questions on the test. So it didn't make the cut.
The program also incentivized schools to cut their losses on struggling students, expelling or encouraging them to drop out to bring the test averages up instead of being able to spend the effort to actually help them.

i don't know what it is about your art that makes me so motivated. i think it's the way you depict wild animals in the most unassuming, americana settings. i've always felt as if i'm not fully meant to be here, some sort of detached - perks of being korean-american and southern - and looking at your art makes me feel seen.
looking at your art makes me feel at home, which is something i don't usually feel. if this makes any sense, it feels like i am the jaguar at the top of the staircase, the stag leaping rooftop to rooftop, the girl with the face of the wolf, that's me.
every time i'm scared that maybe i won't make it, i trot on over here and feel comforted.
i hope you have a great night (or morning, or afternoon, or whatever else it may be in your world), because after looking through your pieces, i know i sure am :)
What tremendously kind things to say. I genuinely used to fantasize that someday my art might make someone feel this way. Messages like this blow my mind. Thank you.
Two vast and trunkless legs of stone...
Do not punish the behaviour you want to see
I mean, it seems pretty obvious when you put it like that, right?
But how many families, when an introvert sibling or child makes an effort to socialize,Ā snarkily say,Ā āSo, youāve decided to join usā?
Or when someone does something theyāve had trouble doing, say,Ā āWhy canāt you do that all the time?ā (Happened to me, too often.)
Or any sentence containing the wordĀ āfinallyā.Ā
If someone makes a step, a small step, in a direction you want to encourage, encourage it. Donāt complain about how itās not enough. Donāt bring up previous stuff. Encourage it.
Because I swear to fucking god there is nothing more soul-killing, more motivation-crushing, than struggling to succeed and finding out that success and failure are both punished.
Encouragement and acknowledgment are so much more effective than punishment.
Geological horror. You find a geode and crack it open and the crystal lining its walls is human blood that can't be genetically matched to anyone. You find a human skeleton but every one of the bones is made from rock, a rock that you know can't be whittled into those shapes. You find layers of clay and loam that sport ancient fossils at the top and the still-rotting corpses of modern animals at the bottom.
This reminds me of the blood river in Antarctica. For like a century scientists had no clue why this river looked like, acted like, and felt exactly like blood. Turns out itās just really high in iron.
"Blood River in Antartica" yeah right there's no way a river looks like bl-
...nevermind
Thereās like. A ton of personifications. Including but not limited to the above:
Quarantine Man
The Taiwan CDC with a Disinfectant Gun
Hepatitis but a Boy Band
Syphilis with Gender (儳) and other Bio Information
Varicella (chicken pox) and Herpes Zoster (shingles) as Children
The Plague, but Hot Lady (also with bio information)
Fuckboy Influenza
Measles, but Hot Guy
Lyme Disease with a Mech????
And, of course, COVID-19 in all their gender neutral glory.
Thereās more but I hit the image limit. Iāve got a couple articles about them, too:
Taiwan CDC's personified disease illustrations go viral in US | 2020-10-24 09:10:00
Please don't try to roll for them in gacha. Or get them in anyway.
Letās make this post even longer because I have even more images saved. Next up, we got:
Tsutsumagushi Disease
Chikungunya Fever!
MERS
Pertussis (whooping cough) with a horrifying (almost body horror) headpiece and flute
Dengue Fever, the image of which literally made me stop breathing for a moment when I first saw it
Japanese Encephalitis (as... idols, maybe?)
And Zika Virus (so pretty! and for what???)
And some higher res images of the ones from the video (Legionnairesā Disease, Viral Gastroenteritis, and Rubella). Unfortunately, I could not fit Rabies because of the image limit.
The lime disease mech is definitely supposed to be a tick
Also Rabies
@bogleech this seems like something up your alley
Dengue and Zika are both dressed in the colors of the mosquito that typically spreads them!
this is so fucking sick i need prints of these immediately
Lyme disease also has an outfit that when viewed from above would be a bullseye shape, which is a characteristic first symptom of the disease visible on the skin around the site of the bite.
OK, so I've seen this image set before, and it is AMAZING! But it's only the recent discussion that made me realize that people may not be understanding many of the visual references in these images. So... with no further ado...

I like stories where a normal human child is being raised by a sinister supernatural being who is totally malevolent except when it comes to their kid. Those are so much better than the ākids are scaryā changeling type horror movies.
Like a perfectly well-adjusted well-mannered friendly child that is like āThis is my dad, Surazal. He comes out of the mirrors in dark rooms. He makes really good blood pudding but heās bad at playing catch. Most people canāt see his corporal form but I can because he says I have special eyes.ā
āMom says that you can stay over but you have to promise not to leave my room between midnight and 1 am. You can play Mario Cart with me! But you have to knock on every closed door in the house before entering just because dad might be in there and if you look upon his visage without drinking the holy fruit juice, you might go crazy or something. Also dad is really excited I have a new friend and heās going to to make hardtack and mystery stew for us! Youāll love it!ā
In high school the kid gets a friend that is an amateur demonologist who initially befriends them in hopes of exorcizing their house but ends up becoming buddies with Surazal too because they crave parental affection.
Surazal stands at the end of the vast dark hallway and says āYou Too Have Special Eyes, Little One. You Can See Me Without Being Taken By The Madness. Within You, I Sense Great Turmoil And Sadness. In My Younger Years, I Would Have Exploited The Sadness As Weakness In Your Very Soul. I Would Have Worn Your Skin Like A Mask And Run Through The Village Streets, Supping Blood From Every Man I Encountered. But Now I Have No Use For Woe. Perhaps You Would Like To Watch Beetlejuice In The Family Room With My Daughter While I Prepare Cupcakes. I Am Sensing You Have A Fondness for Red Velvet.ā
