Hi I'm supposed to be packing but instead I'm doing Dark's replies but instead I come up for a headcanon for Dante accidentally:
This is a wip headcanon, I will expand on it probably on a plane.
Dante never really gains control of his devil trigger, not until DMC2. His primary way of activating it is through anger and other emotions.
Between, DMC3 where he activates it for the first time after the defeat of Vergil. There are obvious signs of anger there, what with his brother taking his amulet and what his intentions are. Not to mention losing.
DMC1 Dante's weapons are the cause of his own Devil Trigger. But when Mundus strikes down Trish, talks shit, and begins to attack Dante.. Well..
Self-explanatory.
DMC4 even, while Nero is beating in Dante's face. There's a flash of his arm converting into his DT. Again, anger and for his age and power, there's little self control with those flashes happening. Even if he was 'playing around' with Nero, he needed to suppress a trigger from happening.
Plus, on the subject of DMC4's Dreadnaught, the supposed to be but cancelled 'secondary' devil trigger, Dante was supposed to have limited control over it.
And Nero was supposed to have one as well, but you could control his better than you could Dante's.
Okay, I'm done.
