"January," Gale said, very soft. They brushed his cheek. It was a powerful enough thing to snap him back into himself, more or less. Very lightly, they tilted him away from the body, and that just kissed his ribs against theirs. He turned to stone, terrified he was going to hurt them if he breathed, even while his heart swelled painfully with knowing that they didn't think he would.

“You can do whatever you want to me,” he said softly, and immediately he felt ashamed that he couldn’t quite meet Mori’s eyes, and frustrated with himself for not sounding more enthusiastic. He assumed it was either of those things that triggered Mori’s reaction. Sometimes Thaniel was amused or grateful by how expressive the younger man was, even if the genuine feeling only showed for a moment, but right now, this was not helpful. Mori’s face flickered between surprise, confusion, bewilderment, and – a tiniest bit – indignation. Many thoughts ran through Thaniel’s mind, how he should have known better; that the youth tend to be fickle and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Mori would have baited him only to turn him away. At least he wasn’t laughed at in the face, small mercy that it was. But just as he was about to move, Mori pinned his wrist down to stop him in his tracks. “I hoped we could do it together.” Mori’s voice was firm, but for a few brief seconds his whole countenance changed; open and earnest, doing his best to drive his point home.
